Boys Pole Vault Preview
It's been a banner season for Hershey's Justin Rogers, who has vaulted higher than any other Pennsylvania high schooler has. The senior cleared 17-00.25 at the VA Showcase to break the all-time PA state record. On the heels of an outdoor state title last spring, Rogers, a UVA recruit, will look to add indoor state gold to his resume, and he will be the big favorite to do just that.
Rogers has cleared 16 feet or better on six different occasions this winter. He most recently jumped 16-8 at the last VaultWorX meet, and looks to be in a good spot for another big day at Penn State. The meet record stands at 16-3 from all the way back in 2004. Surely, Rogers would like to take down that record.
Two boys behind Rogers are jumping very well at the right time. Waynesburg Central's Andrew Layton vaulted to a big PR of 15-6 to take the TSTCA title last week. He has made some major improvements in the event over the last month, and is jumping very well at the right time. The same goes for Penncrest's Daniel Munro, who put down a nice PR of 15-4 to win the TFCAofGP Meet of Champions. He's in a good spot entering this weekend after a big last week.
Bethel Park's Isaac Nirella is another 15-footer in the field. He vaulted 15-0 at YSU earlier this season, and should be in the mix for a high finish in this field. Riverside's Teddy McHale (14-8 season best) and Butler's Tristan McGarrah (14-6 season best) are among the others looking to get inside the top five on Sunday.
