100m Prelims Produce Thrillers, Two Break PIAA Meet Record

Shippensburg, PA - During the preliminary sections of the 3A 100m dash on Friday, Shaun McCoullum (George Washington) and Lex Cyrus (Susquehanna) both broke the previous PIAA State Championship 100m record.

The previous record of 10.43 was set by Journey Brown (Meadville) in 2017.

In the first heat, Cyrus ran 10.41 (+1.7). Two heats later, Jesse Myers (State College) posted a 10.44 (+1.3) and just missed the mark that Cyrus had set.

Another two heats later, in heat five, Shaun McCoullum elated the crowd with a 10.37 (+1.3).

In total, four boys ran 10.50 or faster. Gabriel Scott (Central Dauphin) posted a 10.50 (+0.1) to join the aformentioned trio. He had substantially less wind than the others. 

In all, it took a 10.69 to qualify for the finals on time. Isaac Yarnell (Hollidaysburg), Marc Cobbs (North Penn), Matthew Gregory (OJR), and Joshua Dean (Academy Park), will join the other four qualifiers in tomorrow's final.

In the 2A Boys race, Tristin Ohler (Meyersdale) was the top qualifier for tomorrow's final. He ran 10.86 (-0.1). Xavier Diaz (Mount Carmel), and Jamari Curlett (North East) joined him in the sub-11 club with times of 10.91(-0.1) and 10.99 (+0.8) respectively.
