On Tuesday - Pennsylvania Legend, Ed Helbig, passed away at the age of 72.

Coach Ed Helbig was entering his 50th year as a coach at Baldwin High School. His impact on the sport, particularly in Western PA, will be felt long after his passing.

Helbig passed away after a year-long battle with esophageal cancer. Despite his fight, his presence in the Cross Country and Track and Field community was unwavering. In addition to his coaching duties, he was the head of the Tri-State Track Coaches' Association (TSTCA) and a chairman on the WPIAL (District 7) cross country and track committee. He has also been involved in the PIAA steering committee.

In February, Helbig was inducted into the Baldwin Hall of Fame. He won two District 7 Championships, collected five runner-up finishes, 38 section titles and led 75 individual District 7 Champions during his time.

As a meet director, Helbig has helped create and direct some of the biggest events in Western PA. From the upcoming Red, White and Blue Invitational, to the WPIAL Championships.

In May, the Baldwin Invitational celebrated its 50th running. That meet was founded by Coach Chuck McKinney, but Helbig eventually took over the event and fostered its growth. In 2024, there were over 2,100 performances and over 65 teams in attendance.

His dedication will not be forgotten, and we will forever be thankful for his years of service.
