PIAA District 2 Championships

Elk Lake High School

Conditions were nowhere near ideal for a state qualifier. Nothing but wet and muddy grass, trails, and rocks awaited these teams who were looking to extend their seasons ten more days.

Two previously ranked teams went to head to head in AA boys, with Holy Redeemer getting the district championship over Elk Lake 52-73. Elk Lake had the district individual champion in Luke Jones (16:45) and both teams had three runners in the top ten. But Holy Redeemer took the title with their 4th and 5th finishing in the top 20 and Elk Lake's 4th and 5th finishing in the 30s. AJ Limongelli was Holy Redeemer's top runner, finishing 2nd in 17:02.

Holy Redeemer also beat Elk Lake in AA girls, but it was a lot closer than the boys. Elk Lake had five in the top twelve (3-4-10-11-12), but Holy Redeemer had four in the top seven, including a 1-2 finish from district champion Marissa Durako (19:08) and teammate Rachel Sowinski (19:25). Holy Redeemer won by nine, 31-40Tunkhannock boys survived a 30 second spread from Dallas Area to become the lone state representative in AAA boys with a 43-56 victory. Dallas placed six in front of Tunkhannock's number five, but Tunkhannock placed four in the top eight led by district champion Reece Ayers in 16:22.

Dallas girls were the only team with three inside the top 16 overall and five inside the top 18 to cruise to the AAA championship 59-110 over Wallenpaupack. Dallas also had the district champion, as freshman Regan Rome won her first ever district race with a time of 19:25. The race had three freshmen in the top five overall.

AAA girls featured a close battle for the five team qualifying spots for next Saturday's state championships, as places 2-7 were only separated by 30 points and places 3-7 were separated by 12 points. The team that rose over the clutter was Manheim Township, led by a 15th place finish from Kasey Mann (19:57), used a 65 second spread and all five scoring runners under 60 points to score 160 points to win the team championship. Leigha Anderson was 2nd in 19:07 to lead Cumberland Valley to a 2nd place finish. Central York finished 3rd with Kelsey Ibarra winning the individual championship in 19:02. Her team scored 207 points. Lower Dauphin scored 208 for 4th, and Governor Mifflin scored 209 points for 5th and the last qualifying spot, beating out Chambersburg by 4 points. Tessa Mundell's 3rd place finish in 19:12 was the difference in getting her team in the meet, despite Chambersburg scoring five finishing under 65, compared to Governor Mifflin having a 112 in their scoring five. York Suburban was 7th but only 10 points behind 5th place with 219 points.
Hempfield was the clear winner of AAA boys, becoming the only team in the field to score under 200 points with their winning score of 176, led by a runner up finish from Matthew Groff (16:22). Chambersburg (2nd with 202), Cumberland Valley (3rd with 228), and Cedar Crest (4th with 254) qualified for states with little difficulty. Manheim Township snagged the last qualifying spot by 3 points over Northern and Governor Mifflin 288-291-295. Manheim Township benefitted from their own 55 second spread, Northern's top runner being outside the top fifteen, and Governor Mifflin having a fifth runner in the 140s. Individually, Alex Galli of Cedar Crest came away the winner in a close pack of four with a winning time of 16:20. Matthew Groff of Hempfield was 2nd in 16:22. Zach Greth of Exeter was 3rd in 16:23, and Brandon Taylor of Kennard Dale was 4th in 16:24.

They placed their scoring five in the top 16 team places with a 41 second spread to win by 30 points, 57-87. None of their runners finished inside the top ten overall. Their top runner, Brennan Moyer was 12th overall. Oley Valley was the 3rd team to qualify for states, edging 4th place York Catholic 136-143.

PA#4 Cardinal O'Hara boys succeeded in their rematch with PA#7 Lasalle 32-46 to take home the AAA boys championship for the first time. Cardinal O'Hara had a spread of 27 seconds, their 2nd best of the season, led by a 2nd place finish from Chris Garrity in 16:39. The scoring five would end up in the top eleven overall. Lasalle started out well, as their five were running with O'Hara's five at the one mile mark.

Tom Trainer of Lasalle was the first to get out of the woods and would win the individual championship in 16:14. Lasalle's remaining runners finished in the top fourteen overall, but O'Hara's small spread got the best of the two time defending district champs. This is Lasalle's 3rd straight trip to states and this is O'Hara's 2nd in a row.

PA#8 Archbishop Wood had another solid performance following their league championship win over the weekend. The Vikings placed their scoring five in the top ten overall led by a 2nd place finish from freshman Kasey Brown (19:51) to score 29 points and beat the defending AAA girls district champions Cardinal O'Hara. O'Hara will still be making the trip to states with their 2nd place finish, holding off a strong  charge from 3rd place St Hubert's. O'Hara used a 28 second spread to make their 3rd straight trip to the state meet. Hubert's was led by a 3rd place finish from Teresa Ortiz (20:06). Archbishop Carroll's Katie Rodden won her 2nd district title in the past three years with her winning time of 19:35.

Masterman boys continue to be the cream of the crop in AA boys in the district, placing their scoring five in the top eight overall led by a 2nd place finish from Miguel Ruiz (17:54) to win the title with 24 points. Lansdale Catholic made the best of their return to the AA ranks by taking the 2nd state qualifying spot with 95 points, led by a 3rd place finish from junior Ryan Debarberie (18:06). PIAA District 4 Championships

Bloomsburg University

Northeast Bradford spent most of the season in the AA top five this season and then had a minor hiccup last weekend to fall out of the rankings. Meanwhile Canton broke into the top five with a big win last weekend. The two schools went head to head and Northeast Bradford returned to the form they showed for most of the season. In the AA boys race, Northeast Bradford defeated AA PA#3 Canton 53-106 to win the district title. Both teams will get one more shot at each other next weekend on the state's biggest stage. But today, Northeast Bradford had their top four in front of Canton's number one runner and had their scoring five in the top 25 overall, including two in the top five. Canton earned 2nd place with a nine second spread from 1-5 and their five in between places 19 and 24. While those two teams butted heads, Joel Christian of Towanda won the individual championship with a time of 16:38 to win by 11 seconds over runner up Donny Scatena of Central Columbia.

In AA girls, Lewisburg once again came away with the team championship, this time defeating runner up Sayre 56-104. Lewisburg was led by a 7th place finish from Shannon Wright (20:49) and the team had a spread of 61 seconds with the rest of their scoring five finishing in the top 16 team places. Freshman Violet Learn of Mansfield started out her district championship career with a win, running 20:11 to edge out 2nd place Casey Norton of Troy (20:12) and 3rd place Susan Learn, her sister, in 20:13.

In AAA boys, Jersey Shore had the individual champion and came away with the team championship. Senior Ben Copenhaver ran 16:17 to win the individual gold medal and his performance led five in the top twenty team places to earn the opportunity to represent the district at states. The finished the race with 50 points to beat out Williamsport by 27.

Perhaps the best performance of the day came from AAA girls, as Danville came up one point short of compiling a perfect score. Danville finished the meet with a 1-2-3-4-6 to score 16 points and cruise to the team championship. Individual champion Alison Billas led the charge with her winning time of 19:38. Sarah Wirth of Williamsport Area prevented the perfect score from happening, finishing fifth in 21:09.

Cooper's Lake was host to the biggest upset of the district championship races thus far. For most of the season, PA#2 North Allegheny girls were coming away team champions in many of the state's big races. Before the WPIAL Championship, their closest win came in Ohio back in September. On the same course where last week they won by 100 points to win the Tri States title, there was a change in another team. North Hills sat out one of their members of the Malone Family triple threat up front who have been tough to beat all season. In the AAA girls championship race, they proved it. Margo (District Champion in 18:41), Shannon (3rd in 19:07) and Mary (7th in 19:23) made a 38-50 finish from their 4th and 5th runners hold up and become the first team to knock off North Allegheny this season by a score of 99-109. North Allegheny had a spread of 45 seconds, something they have relied on for most of the season, but North Hills had three in front of their number one to separate the two teams. Mount Lebanon (3rd with 145) and Pine-Richland (4th with 149) will also represent district seven at states.

Last week at this venue, PA#3 North Allegheny lost their number one ranking with a 2nd place finish at Tri States behind new PA#2 Baldwin. Ryan Gil didn't run for North Allegheny that day, which could have been a factor for Baldwin winning. Gil returned to the lineup and Baldwin did not leave with the same result. Baldwin had the better spread (56 seconds to 76 seconds) and had three runners before North Allegheny's 3rd. But Gil's 4th place finish in 15:39, followed by a 5th place finish by teammate Logan Steiner in 15:54 to lead four in the top twenty and to the AAA boys title 80-86 over Baldwin. The other big story in the WPIAL district was the 1-2-3 combo of North Hills. Once again, they showed their might with another 1-2-3 finish, led by champion Zach Hebda (15:29), runner up Juris Silenieks (15:37), and bronze medalist Joe Kush (15:38). PA#9 Mount Lebanon hung tough with the PA#2 and PA#3 teams with a 3rd place finish of 112 points. 4th place went to Pittsburgh Central Catholic with 197 points.

PA#2 Quaker Valley boys made a strong case as the favorite going into next week's state championships. In a field of 37 teams, Quaker Valley won the AA boys title with an impressive 25 points with a 1-4-5-7-8 finish with the five scorers separated by only 31 seconds, their best of the season. Their nearest opponent was 131 points back. L.J. Westwood led the charge for the champions with his own championship performance, winning the race in 16:34, eleven seconds better than 2nd place Jack Bagamery of Shady Side Academy. Asa Equels of Beaver Area was 3rd in 16:49. Team wise, South Fayette (2nd with 156), South Side Beaver (3rd with 214), and Northgate (4th with 227) will join Quaker Valley at the state meet.

PA#2 Quaker Valley girls had a similarly dominant performance of their own to win the AA girls championship. They had a spread of 37 seconds, placed their scoring five in the top 16, and was over 100 points better than 2nd place Vincentian Academy (185). Northgate finished 3rd with 208 points and South Park finished 4th with 235 to also make the trip to Hershey. Nicole Hilton of South Fayette came away with another victory, taking home the district championship with a time of 19:10. Birdgit Walters of Northgate was 2nd in 19:38 and Rachel Hilliard of South Side Beaver was 3rd in 19:47.

AAA boys was as good of a race as PA#1 West Chester Henderson could have asked for. The defending champions look ready to defend their title next weekend with their winning performance of 73 points. GIRLS DISTRICT ONE AA and AAA  2010 PREVIEW

by Coach Coren (Strath Haven) jumpdr1@aol.com

AA GIRLS

1st place team and next 5 non-1st-place team finishers qualify for STATES

TEAM
ST. BASIL-ST. BASIL-ST. BASIL-ST. BASIL---That’s right!  4 times in a row ST. BASIL has won AA District 1.  With an outstanding, emotional coach, the girls from Basil are always tough!  And this year is no different.  VILLA JOSEPH MARIE will give them a push, but ST. BASIL looks to be going for 5 straight.

INDIVIDUALS
With Megan McGarrity (10) (3 2009) leading the way for her team (ST. BASIL) this year, she appears to be the favorite to capture the individual AA championship as well.  This still leaves 5 spots to make it to STATES.  Here are the top prospects---McDonald (SACRED HEART)---Mahoney (11)(VILLA JOSEPH MARIE)(2 2009)---Twomey(9)(VILLA JOSEPH MARIE)---Moss(12)(NEW HOPE-SOLEBURY)(10 2009)---Davies(10)(LOWER MORELAND)(7 2009)--Lambright()(CHRISTOPHER DOCK)--Ballantine(12)(JENKINTOWN).

AAA GIRLS

5 teams plus the next 25 non-team finishers qualify for STATES

TEAM
HISTORY---NORTH PENN(1st 2008) has qualified 8 of the last 11 years--WEST CHESTER HENDERSON has made it 5 of the last 7 years--DOWNINGTOWN EAST (3rd 2007 and 2008)

For the third year in a row District One gets only 5 TEAMS to qualify for STATES.  In the past 3 years it has taken 236(2007), 363(2008), and 274(2009) to grab the coveted 5th spot!. This year the strong teams appear to be MUCH stronger than the past 3 years.

2010 PREDICTIONS!!??
PENNSBURY will be the District One champion!!! (Some critics say they have run too many big races) We will see!!??  WEST CHESTER HENDERSON will likely be second in District One.  They have exactly what you need--a great coach and an up-front runner and 4 solid others.  In case you missed the results of the SOL Continental race, it was CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 54  CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 55 and NORTH PENN 56.  When looking at these 3 teams’ times in a big race like Districts, CENTRAL BUCKS WEST has no top 20 runner---CENTRAL BUCKS EAST #5 has to tighten their pack a bit---and NORTH PENN (even though losing to these 2 teams) appears to be a slight favorite over both of them.  COUNCIL ROCK NORTH who just lost to PENNSBURY looks to be a favorite over CENTRAL BUCKS EAST, CENTRAL BUCKS WEST, and NORTH PENN if their 4th and 5th runners finish around 85th. DOWNINGTOWN EAST has run well all year and will look to rebound from 2009,  Their depth as a team is remarkable (watch their next 7 in the ‘unseeded” race).  BOYERTOWN and HAVERFORD TOWNSHIP both have a legitimate shot to be in the TOP 5 if they run the race of their lives!

OK  Here it is---My TOP 5 in order?????1)PENNSBURY 2)WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 3)NORTH PENN(history!!) 4)DOWNINGTOWN EAST 5)COUNCIL ROCK NORTH (Being a Central League coach, I must admit I am rooting for HAVERFORD to crack the TOP 5 and represent our league at STATES)

Here is the list in alphabetical order with relevant team finishes and information.

BOYERTOWN--2nd Maroon+Gold--3rd Centaur--5th PIAA Gold--5th Paul Short--1st PAC
CENTRAL BUCKS EAST--7th Sharp (missing #1)--1st CENTRAL BUCKS EAST (missing#2)--4th Champs Briarwood--1st SOL Continental
CENTRAL BUCKS WEST--2nd Sharpe--1st Gettysburg--2nd Council Rock--2nd Tennent--2nd SOL Continental
COUNCIL ROCK NORTH--4th Sharpe--3rd PIAA Gold--2nd SOL National
DOWNINGTOWN EAST--1st Centaur--1st Chris fretz--1st Tennent--2nd Chesmonts
HAVERFORD--2nd Abington--4th PIAA Gold (missing #4)--4th Paul Short--1st Delcos--1st Centrals
NORTH PENN--2nd CENTRAL BUCKS EAST--5th Champs Briarwood--1st Souderton--2nd Champs Salesianum--1st Manhattan E--3rd SOL Continental
PENNSBURY--1st Sharpe--1st Abington--2nd Champs Briarwood to Tatnall DE--1st PIAA Gold--1st Paul Short--9th Manhattan Eastern States(missing 3)--1st SOL National
WEST CHESTER HENDERSON--1st PTXC2--3rd Champs Briarwood--1st Manhattan A--1st Ches-monts

INDIVIDUALS
Assuming PENNSBURY and WEST CHESTER HENDERSON qualify as teams, they will most likely have 5 runners near the front.  Since 3 other teams make it, let’s assume each has 1 or  2 up there and therefore that is ?5 more runners out from the indiv. list. 5 + 5=10----10 +25=35----That’s right!! You will probably have to be 35th or better to make it as an individual.  19:09 is my prediction to make it to STATES!!

Who will be the Individual Champ?
Sargent**(10)(1 2009)(PENNSB) and Kinkead*(12)(CENTRAL BUCKS EAST)(3 2009)(108 2008) will go to war again in what has become a fierce rivalry!  It is possible that they may hold back a little for States, but  no matter, I can not wait to see that battle at both Lehigh and Hershey. As for 3rd thru 5th, Guidera*(12)(CENTRAL BUCKS EAST)(22 2009)(22 2008), Gerlach(11)(PENNR)(27 2009)(25 2008), and  McGovern*(11)(NORTH PENN)(2 2009) are veteran competitors who give it all they have!

Other individuals who are almost assuredly going to make it to STATES are (in alphabetical order)--(** means their team will almost definitely make it--* means their team may make it)

Angello*(11)(BOYERTOWN)(94 2009)
Augustyn**(11)(WEST CHESTER HENDERSON)(4 2009)(7 2008) TOP 12
Callaghan*(10)(DOWNINGTOWN EAST)(67 2009) TOP 12

Steinke(9)(METHACTON)  TOP 12
Weiler*(11)(DOWNINGTOWN EAST)(62 2008)
Weiler*(9)(DOWNINGTOWN EAST)

That’s 5 + 20=25!!!!
There is room for??10 more??

Others who have a legitimate chance to make STATES???
In  somewhat random order they are-----

Rutkowski(12)(STRATH HAVEN)(30 2009)(18 2008)(22 2007) Streak is alive!

AA PA#5 North East and unranked Fairview were dead even after four runners crossed the finish line at 61 points a piece. The champion was going to be determined by the 5th runner. On this day, Fairview's Doug Squirres was the hero as his 33rd place finish was 11 places better than North East's number five, clinching the team championship for Fairview 94-105. Individually, there was a great race going on between Ryan Smathers of North East and Nate Tallada of Saegertown. After a 4:59 first mile, Tallada broke away in between miles one and two to win the individual championship by two seconds of Smathers with a time of 16:11. The 3rd team spot went to previously ranked West Middlesex, who beat out Mercyhurst Prep by four points, 121-125.

In AAA boys, Jacob Kildoo of Grove City made a case for being one of the top contenders for the state title next weekend with a dominating district title winning time of 15:47, winning by 34 seconds over teammate Daniel Jaskowak. Their 1-2 finish led Grove City to the district team title and the long state qualifying spot over Cathedral Prep 38-49.

AA girls had their own close team title race. Mercyhurst Prep put three runners in front of West Middlesex's number one runner, but they had a combined score of 101 points from their final two scoring places. West Middlesex looked to take advantage with a solid 29 second spread covering places 23-25-28-30-35. But Carly Vicary's 3rd place finished proved to be just enough to help Mercyhurst Prep hold off West Middlesex 138-141. North East finished 3rd with 167 points to take the last team qualifying spot. Morgan Richards of Hickory had a nine second lead at the mile mark and that gap never got smaller as she won the district championship with a time of 19:26. Freshman Maggie Prorok of Rocky Grove was 2nd with a time of 19:35.

Meadville had a 69 second spread and their scoring five in the top eleven to win the AA girls district championship, doubing up 2nd place McDowell 29-58. Heather Ziegler of Meadville and teammate Libby Volna both ran identical 20:19 times to take the top two spots.

Angel Piccirillo had a performance that had district 6 fans comparing her to a former All American. The Homer Center junior won the AA girls district title with ease with her winning time of 17:56. That puts her 2nd All Time in district 6, only trailing two time Foot Locker All American Carly Seymour's 17:39. It is faster than the 2006 18:12 that Seymour ran as a junior. Angel's performance was a 63 second improvement from last season on her way to a 5th place finish at states. Leah Anne Wirfel of Forest Hills ran a solid 18:39 for 2nd place. Team wise, Central Cambria earned the opportunity to defend their state championship and go for a 4th straight title, defeating Forest Hills for the team title 50-74. Kendall Seymour led the charge for the champions with her 3rd place finish of 19:10.
