The holiday stretch of the season has come and gone and the sprinters on the girls side continue to perform well, with two teams headlining the performances.
Once again, Swenson were the talk of the meet in New York City at the Marine Corpse Holiday Classic. Swenson cruised to victory in the 4x200 meter relay with a state leading and US#9 time of 1:43.87. Later on, they improved on their state leading time in the 4x400 meter relay with a national leading time of 3:52.95! For good measure, they finished 4th in the shuttle hurdles in 34.51. Central Dauphin East also made some noise, with their top two sprinters having strong weeks. Courtney Mitchell ran a PA#2 of 7.84 in the 60 meter dash at the Burdette Classic to better teammate Deme'shia Davis and her 7.86 at Christmas City. For the week, the 60 meter dash added 6 new performances! Davis also added a 25.45 in the 200 meter dash, which is 2nd to Gwynedd-Mercy's Taylor Williams (25.42). Penn Wood cracked the 4 minute mark in the 4x400 meter relay, running 3:59.76 for PA#2 honors.
Emma Keenan of Gwynedd-Mercy Academy made her debut in the 800 meter run and held off a strong challenge from Ceaira Brown of Overbrook to win the Burdette Classic with a US#2 time of 2:17.01! Brown ran a PA#3 time of 2:19.35 for 2nd. Sara Sargent of Pennsbury went to the North Shore Invite on December 30, and earned 2nd place honors in the mile with a PA#2 time of 5:05.79, a nearly ten second improvement from her mile win on December 16. Kennedy Weisner of Elk County Catholic ran a solid 10:32.16 to win the 3000 meter run at Christmas City, good for PA#3 honors. Regan Rome of Dallas finished 2nd in that race with a PA#4 time of 10:38.54. The lone relay highlight goes to Cardinal O'Hara, who ran a PA#5 time of 12:37.65 in the distance medley relay at Marine Corpse.
In the field events, the triple jump produced a new state leader and six new top eight performances. Quadaisha Newkirk of Paul Robeson became the first girl to crack the 37 foot mark, winning the Burdette Classic with a mark of 37-3. Diamond Hodge of Girls High was 2nd with a PA#2 mark of 36-10.50. Five have cleared 36 feet thus far in the triple jump. Jordan Matthews of Abington improved on her PA#1 mark in the long jump with a winning mark of 18-1 at the Christmas City Relays. Kelly Hooven of St. Hubert's earned a PA#2 mark of 17-3.75 in the same meet, becoming only the 5th long jumper over 17 feet after one month. The pole vault produced the first 12 foot clearance of the season, which belongs to Virginia LaMacchia of Central Columbia.
