The high level of performances coming from the female PA athletes came fast and furious on the first weekend of January, with the distance athletes putting up some strong numbers.
Emma Keenan of Gwynedd Mercy continues to be the class of the 800 meter run, winning her 2nd 800 meters of the season and running her 2nd US#2 time this season. Her 2:15.15 is .12 off the national lead! Natalie Deacon of West Chester Henderson cracked the national top ten with her Chester County winning US#10 time of 2:18.34! Danielle Castaldi of Downingtown East finished two tenths of a second behind her. Sara Sargent of Pennsbury became the first PA miler to crack 5 minutes this season, running 4:59.07 to finish 5th at the Hispanic Games. Hannah Grossman ran a PA#3 time twice in four days, including a 5:07.48 at last night's Delco Champs! Tess (PA#5 5:13.37) and Sophia Meehan (PA#7 5:14.56) of Haverford cracked the top eight in the mile, and Tess also became the new state leader in the 3000 meter run last night with a US#5 time of 10:15.69! Maria Seykora of Notre Dame ran a US#6 time right behind her in 10:15.98. Elizabeth McDonald of Sacred Heart (PA#4 10:23.73) had a breakthrough race last Friday night, with Ann Herman of Pennsbury (PA#5 10:25.68) finishing right behind her. Relays were light, but notable. Notre Dame ran 12:36.01 for PA#5 honors in the distance medley relay, while Methacton (PA#4 9:41.28) amd West Chester Henderson (PA#5 9:42.71) cracked the top five in the 4x800 meter relay.
The 200 meter dash went through a big makeover this weekend, with six new top eight performances, led by a new state leading time from Taylor Williams of Gwynedd Mercy at Delaware in 25.32. Swenson was responsible for three of the performances led by Imani Harris running 25.66 for PA#3 honors. Markeeta Thomas (PA#4 25.86) and Amani Nesmith (PA#6 25.89) were the other members of the trio. The depth of the event has really shown, with fifteen girls already under 26.50 this season. Swenson also had three of the top four performances in the 400 led by Thomas and her 57.08 clocking, over a second better than Caela Williams of Penn Wood (58.20). Tichina Rhodes (58.61) and Shanae Gee (58.89) are the other top four performances. Ples 2-5 in the 4x200 meter changed led by a PA#2 performance from Central Dauphin East in Maryland. Their time of 1:45.73 is the 2nd fastest time on a flat track this season. Central Bucks East (1:46.77), Coatesville (1:47.70), and Norristown (1:47.73) also cracked the top five. Five new teams cracked 4:10 in the 4x400 meter relay led by Downingtown East (PA#3 4:06.18) and Strath Haven (PA#4 4:07.60).
The field events had two new state leading performances over the weekend. Rachel Fatherly of Williamsport became the first state qualifier in the shot put with her debut throw of 39 feet even. Virginia LaMacchia of Central Columbia improved on her state leading mark with a clearance of 12-3 at Kutztown. Olivia Loy of Carlisle cleared 11-6 for PA#2 honors, and Emma Sullivan of Methacton cleared 11 feet even to crack the top four. In the long jump, Holly Sullivan of Owen J Roberts jumped 17-8.50 at Kutztown for PA#2 honors, and in the high jump, Ahmenah Richardson of Milton Hershey jumped 5-4 to tie for PA#3 honors.
