After a full week of track and field action, we have officially reached the midway point of the 2011-2012 indoor season. Last week, we had some big highlights, including a new US#1!
That US#1 came from state leader Megan McCloskey of Germantown Academy in the high jump, who won at DVGTCA #5 with a clearance of 5-8.25. That mark is the best to ever be recorded at Lehigh University in the history of DVG! The long jump, and triple jump added three marks to the top 8 this week, while the shot put added five! The shot put added three 38 foot performances led by the Hickory duo of Taylor Woods (38-11.25) and Jennifer Neider (38-5.50), as the Western side of the state debuted over the weekend. Caitlin Yakas of Sun Valley threw the best mark out East with a PA#4 mark of 38-0.25. The long jump added three more state qualifying long jumpers led by Strath Haven's Rachel Van Metre's PA#3 17-7.50 this past Friday night. Meanwhile in the triple jump, Swenson showed that they have some strength outside of the sprint events, Amani Nesmith jumping a PA#3 mark of 36-6 at Lehigh.
The 3000 meter run was the big event on the track, with the state leading changing twice in a three day period, and three top ten US marks! First was the one on one dual between Tess Meehan of Haverford and Maria Seykora of Notre Dame at the Girls DELCO championship meet last Tuesday night. After Tess and Maria both ran US top five performances, Meghan McGovern of North Penn regained her state lead 72 hours later at Lehigh with a US#4 time of 10:10.40! On Saturday, Sara Sargent ran 10:16.43 for a 3rd place finish in New York for PA#4 honors. The PA top four are in the US top nine! The mile got clustered at the top, with three more sub 5:02 performances led by a state leading performance from Tori Gerlach of Pennridge! Her 4:58.67 performance placed 3rd at the Millrose Trials, while teammate Marissa Sheva ran a PA#4 time of 5:01.67 in the same race. Saturday, Maria Seykora qualified for the Millrose Mile with a winning performance of 5:01.09 at the Molloy Stanner Games.
In the sprints, we had a new state leading performance in the 60 meter hurdles from Markeeta Thomas of Swenson. Her 9.18 is a slight improvement from her early season 9.22, but now her lead in the event is a full tenth of a second. Her teammate Amani Nesmith earned her 2nd state top five performance of the weekend, winning the 60 meter dash at Lehigh in a T-PA#5 time of 7.90. Current 60 meter dash leader Jody Ann Evans got closer to the top in the 200 meter dash with a PA#4 time of 25.84 at DVGTCA #5 on Friday night.
As of the half way point of the season, PA has two US#1 performances, five US top five performances, and 17 US top ten performances!
