AA Girls' 200m Preview
It's no shock that Thelma Davies is fast. But even the two-time AA 200 meter state champ surprised the state (and herself) when she dropped a wind-legal 23.49 in the prelims at the District 1 Championships. That broke Dasia Pressley's former state record of 23.52.
So if there is nice weather over the weekend, we could be in line for something very special out of Davies. As a freshman, she tied Lauryn Williams' PIAA meet record of 23.85. She'll look to take it all for herself this weekend. She'll be heavily favored to win.
There should be a good race on for spots in the final. District 12 boasts a pair of serious medal contenders. Mykala Perry of Neumann Goretti took home the 200 meter title and Swenson's Jada Smith was second at the stacked District 12 Champs. Smith was fourth last year and Perry was fifth. Both will aim for more this season.
Lydia Bottelier of Palisades was seventh last year, but she's been faster this season. She went 24.87 to win the Colonial League title and then took the District 11 crown a week later. Athens Area's Emily Lunger is another returner from last year's final. She took sixth last year and ran 25.78 to win the District 4 title over the weekend.
South Park freshman Maddie Raymond dropped a quick 25.16 to win the WPIAL title this past week. She'll be one to watch for in this loaded field. Penns Valley's Isabella Culver, Bishop Carroll'a Alyssa Martinazzi, and Calvary Christian's Alexandra Brizzi are among the other final hopefuls to watch out for.
