Early on in the 2012 season, the most competitive events thus far have been in the relays, as very few teams have managed to pull away from a very congested pack. The top seven teams in the 4x100 meter relay are all under 50 seconds, but are only separated by six tenths of a second, with Norristown leading the pack in 49.27. Penn Wood is the only team under 4 minutes in the 4x400 meter relay (3:59.09 on April 4), but the rest of the top eight are within six seconds them. Central Bucks West ran 4:00.90 on Saturday to earn PA#2 honors. Cardinal O'Hara took the top spot in the 4x800 meter relay (9:35.64), joining Bethel Park as the only teams under 9:40 in the event. PA#3 through PA#7 are two seconds apart. As April moves forward, will the top teams pull away or will the chase pack take over?
In open running events, some of the stars that stole the show indoors picked up where they left off, including Homer Center's Angel Piccirillo. The indoor mile state record holder and national runner up started her final outdoor season at Altoona on March 31 and held off a strong challenge from Kennedy Weisner of Elk County Catholic in the 1600 meter run and clock a US top five time of 4:53.43! In the rematch at 800 meters, Piccirillo ran 2:15.37 to earn her 2nd PA#1 mark of the weekend. Kenya Woodall of Coatesville also earned two PA#1 marks in the 400 and 200 meter dashes! Woodall came close to her indoor personal best (56.08 on March 30) and ran the first sub 25 second 200 meter dash (24.93) in her season debut. Kayla Coley of Cheltenhan debuted with PA#1 marks in both hurdles, running 14.4 in the 100 meter hurdles and 44.5 in the 300 meter hurdles.
In the field events, PA earned their first US#1 mark of the season! In PA's strongest field event, Christine Streisel of Tamaqua threw a national leading mark of 160-11 at her home invitational on March 30, adding seven feet to her previous personal best! Jessie Merckle of Fort Cherry (151 feet even) and Kelsey Carlsen of Northeast Bradford (147-5) round out not just the PA top three, but the national top three! Other standout field performances include Rachel Fatherly of Williamsport, who took the state lead in the shot put with a throw of 43-7.25. Freshman Cyre Virgo of Fleetwood Area is the state leader in the high jump with a mark of 5-6. Diamond Hodge of Girls High had a big performance in the triple jump on Saturday with a state leading mark of 38-5.50, just two inches short of her lifetime best.
