Like the girls, the boys relays have been very congested thus far. The 4x100 meter relay is led by a 43.03 performance from Milton Hershey. However, the chase pack is just over six tenths of a second behind them. The 4x400 meter relay is just as tight, as the top eight teams are separated by just three seconds! Wilson (3) leads this group with a time of 3:23.46 last Friday at christopher Newport. The 4x800 meter relay has some separation, as Lasalle became the first team to break 8 minutes, running 7:59.06 at the Colonial Relays in Virginia. Spring Ford ran 8:00.87 for PA#2 honors at the PW Colonial Relays. Nine teams are sub 8:10 as of right now.
The field events have been strong from the opening weekend, especially the throwing events. Billy Stanley of South Park earned US#2 honors in the javelin on March 28 with a dual meet winning throw of 212-3! David Reinhardt of Bradford Area earned US#4 honors at the Bruce Dallas Invite with a throe of 194-3! Kyle Long of Hempfield has had two strong discus performances thus far this season, setting a meet record at the PA Classic on March 31, and then at the Bruce Dallas Invite on April 7, he tooped that mark with a US#5 performance of 190-3! Shot put All American Kyle Felpel of Cocalico took the state lead in the shot put with a throw of 58-11.25 at Bruce Dallas on Saturday. In the jumps, Patrick Anderson of Kane Area got right back over 16 feet in the pole vault in Altoona with a clearance of 16-2! Ibn Short of Milton Hershey became the state leader in the high jump with a clearance of 6-9! Wellinton Zaza of Strath Haven set a lifetime best of 48-4 to take the state lead in the triple jump, while indoor triple jump national champion Imani Brown of Reading has the state lead in the long jump with a mark of 22-8.25.
Decent temperatures have had the sprinters off to a nice start in 2012. The 100 meter dash has seven performances under 11 seconds already this season, led by a 10.76 performance by Wellington Zaza of Strath Haven on April 4. Ryan Hynes of Central Bucks South edged out Shacor Hamilton of Cardinal O'Hara (21.89-21.91) in the 200 meter dash at the Council Rock Invite to take the state lead. Jimmy Brooks of Wilson (3) ran 49 seconds flat to take over the state lead in the 400 meter dash and lead three other runners under 50 seconds. In the distance events, Brendan Shearn of North Schuylkill traveled to the Arcadia Invite in California to run a strong 9:15.01 in the 3200 meters to lead the state by 13 seconds. Vincent Tonzo of North Allegheny ran 1:54.26 to lead the 800 meter run by almost two seconds.
