Highlighting the weekend are a bunch of new PA #1 performances. Karen Shump of Penncrest PRed (indoor or out) with a US#1 shot put of 48-10.75 on Friday night. At the same meet, Ryann Krais, Methacton, leapt 19-00.50 in the long jump, easily top five in the US. In western PA, there were two new PA#1's where 2nd place is now way back. In the 3200, FL Finalist Carly Seymour of Central Cambria traveled the 200 meter tunnel-enhanced Slippery Rock University track in just over 5:33 pace. And Denes Veres of Riverside took over the state shot put lead by well over a foot nearing 59'. In Maryland at the Montgomery County meet in Landover, Boyertown's Jason Weller ran 4:17.47 in the mile and came back with a 9:17.58 3200. Both were 2nd place finishes. On Saturday, Joe Berry, Hatboro-Horsham, cleared a PR 15-02 in the pole vault. Earlier in the week, there were new PA #1's by the Penn Wood girls' 4x200 and by Archbishop Carroll's Amanda Bascelli in the 3000. At Kutztown, Joe Kovacs of Bethlehem Catholic, PRed, improved his season best by almost two feet, and moved into PA#2 with a huge throw. More... In Annville, Central Cambria junior Kristin Brandt moved into PA#2 in the triple jump with a leap over 37'.

1/13 INDOOR WEEK #7 SUMMARY:

On 1/8 at the CHESTER COUNTY INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS at Ursinus College, Kaleena Gray of Coatesville continued her strong season, throwing over 41'to win the shot put. Christen Arnold of Downingtown West was over 17' again in the long jump. Henderson's Carly Hamond broke 5:20 in the mile. And Conestoga's Ashley Niness had a strong race with Coatesville's Danielle Lambert in the 400. On 1/9 at the DELCO GIRLS INDOOR CHAMPS @ Haverford College, junior Karen Shump of Penncrest showed that her retirement from softball continues to pay dividends as she flirts with beating her outdoor shot put PR, indoors. At her home championships, she threw over 47 for the third time this season. Penn Wood's girls posted the best 4x200 in the state so far, holding off Chester by just .7. And Upper Darby and Ridley were within two seconds as well. Archbishop Carroll freshman Amanda Bascelli posted the fastest 3000 of the year. On 1/10 at the ALBRIGHT COLLEGE HS INVITE #2, Tory Toso of Wilson (West Lawn) won the pole vault and 55 hurdles. Megan Shadduck of Wyomissing also won two events, the long jump 400. Kutztown's Tony Ahers won the 55 after posting a faster time in the prelims. At the TSTCA INDOOR MEET #2 at Pitt, there were some fast 3000's by the guys as two more athletes entered the sub 9 class... making the total five for not even mid-season. Pittsburgh Central Catholic's Scott Van Kooten ran a PA#2. Canon McMillan's Melissa Alavzen leapt to a PA#3 mark in the long jump. Sean Gil of North Allegheny improved to PA#2 in the pole vault. Valley's Toney Clemons joined three others at PA#1 in the 60 Hurdles. At Friday's COLGATE WOMEN'S GAMES, PA athletes took the top three spots in the 1500 with Engineering & Science teammates Syeeda Gee and Kasia Taylor going one-two, followed by Upper Dublin's Alexandra Brasington. At Friday's SLIPPERY ROCK HS INV #1, two new PA#1's were the highlight. The marks not only topped the charts, but took commanding leads. She also won the 1600. And Denes Veres of Riverside took over the state shot put lead by well over a foot nearing 59'. North Allegheny's Jade Hambrick joined the season's 40-foot club to win the girls competition. Also on Friday, at the DVGTCA INDOOR MEET #5 @ Lehigh University, amazing juniors Karen Shump of Penncrest and Ryann Krais of Methacton were at their mid-season bests. All Shump did was PR - indoor or out - by topping 48' in the shot put for the second time in her prep career. It was an all-time association mark and the best in the US this year. Continuing to mix up the events, Krais went with the long jump and 200. She was over 19', which is currently US#2. She also won the 200. The West Chester Henderson quartet of Jackie Merrick, Anna Pavone, Amy Jordan and Carly Hamond posted the top PA 4x800 of the year. And North Penn's Stephanie McDougal was over 12' in the pole vault, also the best ever for the association. On Friday, at the DICKINSON COLLEGE HS INVITE #2, JP McCaskey's Lynn Anderson won the 55 dash, holding off Juan Steward of Cumberland Valley by a tenth-of-a-second. In the 55 hurdles, McCaskey's Bernardo Asencio won. In girls' competition, Indian Valley's Danielle Lockwood won the 55 hurdles. Paige Anderson, Cumberland Valley, beat Chambersburg's Hayley Thomas in the 3200. Trinity's Erin Guty won the 55 dash the hard way, running the same time in both the prelims and the finals. On Friday at the BLOOMSBURG UNIVERSITY HS INV #2, some of the strongest competition came in the 55 hurdles as Hughesville teammates Rachel Houseknect and Becka Newhart battled in the prelims and finals. Houseknect won on both tries. Moutoursville's Michael Keenan won the boy's 55 hurdles. Caitlin Cavanaugh of Danville won both the 800 and the mile. At the MARIETTA COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL MEET #1, Hopewell's Kailey Baker won the 55. She also took 2nd in the 200. Katelynd McElhany, Canon-McMillan, was 5th in the 55 hurdles. She also ran on their 3rd place 4x400 and 4th place 4x200 relays, and tied for 6th in the long jump. Teammate Sarah Grossi took 2nd in the 1600. Can-Macs Stephanie Austin won the triple jump with a leap of 34-06.50, and tied for 6th in the long. On Saturday at the MAROON & GOLD INVITATIONAL @ Kutztown University, Jazmin Hunt of Reading was a double winner, taking the 55 hurdles and the high jump. Austin Perron, Engineering & Science, battled it out in a close 400, edging Joshua Travis of Pocono West. Four girls busted 11 in the 3000, led by the second place by Edel Crowe of State College. The boys shot put is strong the season. Joe Kovacs of Bethlehem improved his season best by nearly two feet to move into PA#2. At the MOLLOY STANNER GAMES at the NY Armory, there were not PA results in the top six. At the MONTGOMERY COUNTY INVITATIONAL in Maryland, Boyertown's Jason Weller pulled off quite a double, breaking 4:18 in the mile and 9:18 for 3200. The mile could very well earn him an invitation to the Millrose Game in early February. Baldwin's Chris Wolfe was under 1:58 to finish 2nd in the 800 - a PA#1. At the TFCAGP D1 INDOOR MEET #6 @ Lehigh University, Joe Berry of Hatboro-Horsham improved his PA#1 pole vault mark by an inch. William Tennent's Jay Pittenger cleared 6-08 in the high jump for the third time this season. Glen Mill's Daren Johnson leapt over 44' in the triple jump. At the TFCAGP D1 INDOOR MEET #6 @ Lehigh University, Great Valley improved to PA#3 in the DMR. Germantown Friends dominated the individual distance events. Jake McKenzie won the 3000, while Max Kaulbach and Elliot Rhodes went one-two in the mile. At the LEBANON VALLEY COLLEGE INDOOR MEET #2, Central Cambria junior Kristin Brandt moved into PA#2 in the triple jump with a leap over 37' for her indoor PR. Chambersburg's MJ Davis won the 55, while Tyler Real of West York took a hot 55 hurdles.



1/8 Chester County Indoor Championships @ Ursinus College

Kaleena Gray of Coatesville is solidly in the 40's this season, throwing 41-07 to win the shot put at her county champs. Christen Arnold of Downingtown West is on training pace with her 2nd best long jump of the season, 17-05.75. Henderson's Carly Hamond went 5:19.25 to take the mile. And Conestoga's Ashley Niness had a strong race with Coatesville's Danielle Lambert in the 400, edging Lambert for the win 59.97-1:00.67.


1/9 DELCO Girls Indoor Championships @ Haverford College

RESULTS POSTED

Junior Karen Shump of Penncrest showed that her retirement from softball continues to pay dividends as she flirts with beating her outdoor shot put PR, indoors. At her home championships, she threw over 47's for the third time this season, going 47-03.50. With her softball pitching days behind her for the first time in her high school career, her marks this season are evidence that the change has had a positive effect. Penn Wood's girls posted the best 4x200 in the state so far, going 1:47.2, holding off Chester by just .7. And Upper Darby and Ridley were within two seconds as well. Throw in Swenson's sub 1:48 from the Hispanic Games in NY, and the 4x200 at States is setting up to be silly fast. Archbishop Carroll freshman Amanda Bascelli posted the fastest 3000 of the year with here 10:32.8. Chester's Shaniel Chambers cruised to a 2:17.3 800 win. And Radnor's Hannah Granger held off Prendie's Erica Matticola and teammate June Farley by less than a second in the Mile, running 5:22.0.


1/10 Albright College HS Invte #2

Tory Toso of Wilson (West Lawn) had a big night, winning the Pole Vault at 10-06 and taking the 55 Hurdles in 8.9 seconds. Reading Holy Name's Hillary Monger had the fastest time of the night in the short hurdles, an 8.6 in the prelims. Megan Shadduck of Wyomissing also won two events, the long jump with a leap of 16-05.50 and the 400 in a time of 1:04.4. Kutztown's Tony Ahers won the 55 in 6.5 after posting a 6.4 in the prelims.


1/11 TSTCA Indoor Meet #2 @ University of Pittsburgh

Some fast 3000's by the guys as two more athletes entered the sub 9 class... making the total five for not even mid-season. Pittsburgh Central Catholic's Scott Van Kooten went 8;47.2, which is not PA#2. Luke Zarzeczny of Northgate/Avonworth was 2nd in 8:53.1. Canon McMillan's Melissa Alavzen leapt 17-05.50 to win the long jump. The mark is PA#3. Sean Gil of North Allegheny improved to PA#2 in the pole vault with a 14-09 clearance. Valley's Toney Clemons joined three others at PA#1 with a converted 8.44h in the 60 Hurdles. Brashear's Jaren De Bardelaben went 6.9 to take the 60m dash.

1/12 Bloomsburg University HS Invitational #2

RESULTS POSTED (There were no field events)

Some of the strongest competition of the night came in the 55 hurdles as Hughesville teammates Rachel Houseknect and Becka Newhart battled in the prelims and finals. Houseknect won on both tries, but her 8.66 in the prelims was her fastest time. Newhart ran 8.98 in the finals for 2nd. Moutoursville's Michael Keenan went 8.14 to win the boy's 55 hurdles. Caitlin Cavanaugh of Danville won both the 800 and the mile.


1/12 Colgate Women's Games HS wk#3 @ Pratt Institute

RESULTS POSTED

PA athletes took the top three spots in the 1500 with Engineering & Science teammates Syeeda Gee (4:50.9) and Kasia Taylor (4:54.2) going one-two, followed by Upper Dublin's Alexandra Brasington (4:54.7). Acoya Gaines, E&S, took 6th in the 400 in 59.5 seconds.


1/12 Dickinson College HS Invite #2

JP McCaskey's Lynn Anderson won the 55 dash in 6.3, holding off Juan Steward of Cumberland Valley by a tenth-of-a-second. In the 55 hurdles, McCaskey's Bernardo Asencio went 7.9 for the win. In girls' competition, Indian Valley's Danielle Lockwood won the 55 hurdles in 8.7 seconds. Paige Anderson, Cumberland Valley, beat Chambersburg's Hayley Thomas in the 3200 11:41.8 to 11:48.5. Trinity's Erin Guty won the 55 dash the hard way, running 7.3 in both the prelims and the finals.


1/12 DVGTCA Indoor Meet #5 @ Lehigh University

These are the meets where athletes work out the kinks. The question for stars Karen Shump of Penncrest and Ryann Krais of Methacton is... what're we going to see when there are fewer kinks? All Shump did was PR - indoor or out - by topping 48' in the shot put for the second time in her prep career. The first time was in outdoor nearly two years ago. This one was just over an inch from 49' feet - 48-10.75 to be exact. That is currently the top throw in the country and the best ever in the Delaware Valley girls association. She also has the 2nd and 3rd best of the season in the US. Continuing to mix up the events, Krais went with the long jump and 200. Her 19-00.50 leap is her 4th best ever, and currently US#2. She also won the 200 in 25.6. The West Chester Henderson quartet of Jackie Merrick, Anna Pavone, Amy Jordan and Carly Hamond posted the top PA 4x800 of the year, a 9:40.5. And North Penn's Stephanie McDougal cleared 12-1 in the pole vault, also the best ever for the association, bettering the 11-06.50 by Bishop Shanahan's Katlyn Fairbairn in 2006.


1/12 Slippery Rock HS Invitational #1 @ Slippery Rock University

Two new PA#1's that not only topped the charts, but took commanding leads. In the 3200, FL Finalist Carly Seymour of Central Cambria traveled the 200 meter tunnel-enhanced Slippery Rock University track to an 11:06.82. 2nd went to Bradford's Sarah Lonzi in 11:45.74. She also won the 1600, going 5:28. And Denes Veres of Riverside took over the state shot put lead by well over a foot with a throw of 58-11. North Allegheny's Jade Hambrick threw 40-4 to win the girls competition.

1/13 Lebanon Valley College Indoor Meet #2

RESULTS POSTED

Central Cambria junior Kristin Brandt moved into PA#2 in the triple jump with a leap of 37-00.25, her indoor PR. Red Land's Lindsay Bumbernick had a strong night, taking 2nd in the triple jump at 35-05.50 and 3rd in the long jump with a 16-02 effort. Asia Walker, Mercersburg Academy won with here 16-03.50, followed by Cedar Crest's Casey Krause at 16-03.25. Chambersburg's MJ Davis went 6.4 to win the 55, while Tyler Real of West York took a hot 55 hurdles in 7.8 seconds.

Hopewell's Kailey Baker won the 55 in 7.47. She also took 2nd in the 200, going 27.44. Katelynd McElhany, Canon-McMillan, was 5th in the 55 hurdles in 9.14. She also ran on their 3rd place 4x400 and 4th place 4x200 relays, and tied for 6th in the long jump. Teammate Sarah Grossi took 2nd in the 1600. Four girls busted 11 in the 3000, led by the second place 10:40.52 by Edel Crowe of State College. The boys shot put is strong the season. Quite a double by Boyertown's Jason Weller. His 4:17.47 could very well earn him an invitation to the Millrose HS Mile in early February. And his 9:17.58 3200 is also the top time in PA this season. Sophomore T. J. Hobart of Baldwin ran 4:22.72 in the same mile. Teammate Chris Wolfe went 1:57.85 to finish 2nd in the 800 - a PA#1.

Great Valley improved to PA#3 in the DMR with a 10:44.1. Germantown Friends dominated the individual distance events. Jake McKenzie went 9:06.1 to win the 3000. Max Kaulbach ran 4:30.3 for 1st, and Elliot Rhodes went 4:33.5 for 2nd in the mile.
