The snow cleared up just in time for the boys to have their last chance qualifier for next Saturday’s annual Meet of Champions competition. As has been the trend the past two years, the performances were red hot! The highlight of the meet was the 800 meter run which saw Kyle Francis of Bensalem edge out Jeff Wiseman of Council Rock South for the win! Francis ran a US#3 1:53.85 while Wiseman ran a US#4 1:53.96! The two of them along with Joey Logue of Pennridge (US#2) and Will Cather of State College (US#5) account for four of the top five 800 meter performances in the country! In another close finish, Jake Brophy of Central Bucks East (PA#5 8:52.95) held off Ross Wilson of Council Rock North (PA#6 8:53.16) to win the 3000 meter run. Christian Brissett of Cheltenham moved up to PA#2 in the 60 meter dash with a winning time of 6.97. Upper Darby ran 8:14.60 to win the 4x800 meter relay. Walt Pegues of Central won the long jump with a mark of 22-5.25, good for PA#7.

Brooklynn Broadwater of Springside Chestnut Hill was one of two double winners on the afternoon. The sophomore wasn’t able to grab the PA#1 mark in the 400 meter dash, but still won the event in 57.82. She then took home the 200 meter dash in a PA#3 25.22. Elizabeth Chikotas, Mile-3000 double
No one stole the show more than Elizabeth Chikotas of Saucon Valley. The senior won both the mile and the 3000 meter run while setting a new meet record in the mile. Chikotas ran a PA#5 5:03.03 to break the 2012 meet record of now former mile state record holder Angel Piccirrillo (5:04.21). Chikotas then ran a solo PA#5 10:14:21 for an encore.
In the field, Megan McCloskey of Germantown Academy reintroduced herself to the top of the state list in the high jump. The senior not only out jumped Claudine Andre of Upper Darby in their highly anticipated matchup, but she broke her own meet record in the process. McCloskey cleared 5-8, a half inch better than her previous record and she is not joint PA#1 with defending state champion Cyre Virgo of Fleetwood. Julia Reeves of Springside Chestnut Hill won the long jump with a 18-4.50, just 1.25 inches better than reigning state leader Holly Sullivan of Owen J Roberts. Courtney McCartney of Selinsgrove threw 42-4 to win the shot put.
For the boys, the field events were the headliners of the day! Morgan Shigo of Fleetwood led the way for the field athletes, throwing a PA#3 58-4 to win the shot put. Chris Stone of Springfield Montco cleared a lifetime best 15 feet to join Ryan Wilkes of Valley View at the top of the state list. Wilkes cleared 14 feet to finish 2nd. Byron Coleman of Plymouth Whitemarsh became the new state leader in the long jump with a mark of 22-11.75, just missing the chance of becoming the first 23 foot man in PA. Randall Johnson of Central Bucks South cleared 6-7 to win the high jump.
On the track, Pennsbury won both the 4x200 (1:31.81) and 4x400 meter relays (3:29.39). Eric Cook of Conestoga won by .002 in the 60 meter dash over Xavier Smith of Daniel Boone. Shaler Area's Brianna Schwartz set a Pennsylvania All Time State Record out in Ohio! The junior won the 1600 meter run with a national leading 4:42.10, which converts to a 4:43.74 full mile, now US#3! That performance breaks the 2012 record set by Homer Center's Angel Piccirillo at the indoor state meet (4:44.20)! Schwartz also added a 2nd place finish in the 800 meter run with a US#3 time of 2:10.77!
Brianna Schwartz - New PA All-Time 1600/Mile Record
MEET SUMMARY BY PHIL GROVE
Brianna Schwartz’s state record might have been the highlight, but it was not the only top performance by Keystone state athletes at the SPIRE Institute. In the boys’ 3,200 meters, Fox Chapel Area’s Colin Martin also was matched against top competition in Ohio’s Nick Elswick, a 2012 Foot Locker Finalist and 9:00.43 performer. Like Schwartz, Martin also responded with a PR. “SPIRE is an amazing facility, their track is beautiful and the competition is always great,” said Martin, who brought a 9:14.73 best into Saturday. “The race started off pretty well, we got out fast, which was perfect.” Taking the lead when the pace started to lag, Martin was in front for about 1,000 meters before Ryan Robinson of Michigan moved into first with 1,200 left. Hoping “to break the field” with about 700 to go, Martin regained the lead and was never headed, winning a battle of Big Ten recruits with the future Wolverine’s US#7 9:13.95 turning back the 9:17.19 by Elswick, an Ohio State signee, as the first seven finishers broke 9:30. “I was pleased with the time and how I handled things tactic-wise,” the winner said. In the boys’ shot put, Max Adams of Hempfield Area finished second with a best of 57 feet, 1 inch. In the girls’ competition, Hempfield’s Maddie Holmberg won the long jump at 18-4.75 and was fourth in the 60 hurdles in 8.95, while teammate Jasmine Jones was sixth in the 60 dash in 7.92 and seventh in the 200 at 25.54 to improve her PA#6 time. Another Hempfield standout – Bridget Guy – won the pole vault at 12-0 as the top six cleared 11-6. Mary Malone of North Hills moved to PA#2 with a runner-up effort in the 3,200 run. Her 10:57.50 clocking followed the US#2 10:26.95 by Michigan’s Audrey Belf. Hempfield’s 4x400 relay ran a PA#6 4:06.09, while Villa Maria is also Pennsylvania’s sixth best in the 4x800 relay after winning in 9:33.69. Girls Highlights
