With Jerrica Bauer not on the line to defend her home course, it set the stage for Gabrielle Wilkinson of Friends Central to claim her first career high school cross country victory. In her 2nd race of the season, Wilkinson ran 19:10 to hold off Abbie Goldstein of Germantown Academy by 10 seconds. Wilkinson’s performance was also good enough to lead her squad to a team title over Archbishop Wood 86-110. For the boys, Council Rock North placed three in the top six, led by a 2-3 finish from Brian Arita (16:16) and Sean Griswold (16:51), to cruise to the team title over Holy Ghost Prep 43-80. Individual honors went to Ben Szuhaj of Penn Charter, who ran a winning time of 16:11 to win by 5 seconds.Girls Highlights

PREVIEW
The biggest meet in the history of the George School will feature Jerrica Bauer defending her home turf and make it three wins in as many weeks. She will have strong competition in Gabrielle Wilkinson of Friends Central. These two had the fastest times for PA athletes at last week's Briarwood Invitational. It's the present vs. the future in the first of several matchups this season. A win on Saturday will give the victor a big advantage over their opponent. In the team chase, Council Rock North has three 20:10 or faster runners in their squad, more than any other team in the race. Gwynedd-Mercy Academy have run well thus far, earning a pair of top three finishes in the early going. Archbishop Wood will be looking for the form of their 2013 campaign that saw them finish 3rd at the state meet after a stuttering start at their home invitational in August.
In the boys race, Council Rock North have been led by Brian Arita, who has had a strong start to the season that includes a runner up finish at the John Sharp Invitational on the opening weekend. Arita will look to lead his team to their first win of the season. Holy Ghost Prep finished 6th last week at the Centaur Invitational and they finished in the top five at Abington. With the competition in the District 1 AA division intensifying, Holy Ghost Prep will look for a win to keep them in contention. |

FLASH UPDATE: Paul Power of Spring Ford had his big breakout moment on the final varsity race of the day, holding off Kevin James of Cardinal O'Hara and Jake Brophy of Central Bucks East to win the boys Gold race in a meet record 15:50! Power becomes the first athlete to break 16 minutes in the 8 year history of this event, and his time is number 4 all time on the state course! James finished in 15:54 and Brophy ran 16:01, all the three fasest times at this competition! James' O'Hara teammates missed the team title by 10 points against Severna Park, 106-116, making it Severna Park's 2nd victory in a PA invitational this season.
Dominic Hockenbury of Lake Lehman ran 16:10 to win the boys Blue race. The team title went to York Suburban. In the White race, Julian DeGroot-Lutzner made it 3 wins out of 3 invitationals, running 16:38 to successfully defend his meet title. Avonworth won by a 50+ point margin, scoring 106 points.
Madeleine Davison of North Allegheny continued her impressive 2014 season, cruising to the individual gold medal in the Gold race with a winning time of 18:18, the fastest time of the day. Cardina O'Hara had four sub 20 minute runners with a 54 second 1-5 spread to score 85 points to win the team title. Central Bucks East, Mount Lebanon, Strath Haven and Great Valley were separated by a slim 15 points for places 2-5. Villa Maria Academy had the most dominant team performance of the day, scoring 56 points, the lowest point total for any team on the day. Clare Brown led the way for the winners, running 19:38 to win the gold medal. In the white race, Marianne Abdalah of Vincentian Academy made it two wins in a row this season and two straight wins at Hershey, running 18:58 to cruise to the crown. The Class A state champions Holy Cross were knocked off by district rivals Elk Lake 78-93 for the team title.

PREVIEW Boys The boys white race is shaping up to be a good one, as Class A teams who have had solid starts to the season look to make a big splash. Masterman enter this race as the defending champions. But the Class A runner ups know that victory here doesn’t guarantee victory in November, as the team they beat at this meet came back to beat them at states. Julian DeGroot-Lutzner will lead the way for the District 12 champions. He will be hoping to earn his 3rd win in as many weeks. He will be challenged by Colten Tremble of South Side and Nick Sweet of Sayre for the individual gold. Avonworth earned a big win at Slippery Rock last week and are looking to build on that momentum of taking down one of the hot teams in the division, Our Lady of Sacred Heart. Penns Valley have one 2nd and one 3rd place finish so far this season, but they will bring on a top three that can put them in the mix at this meet, with the three of them all breaking 18 minutes this season. In the blue race, Dominic Hockenbury of Lake Lehman is back after taking last weekend off to rest. The junior will be looking for his 2nd win of the season. He has broken 16 minutes in both of his appearances, with his latest 15:58 earning him a runner up finish at PTXC 6. As the favorite in AA for the state crown, a good race could set him apart from the rest. Aaron Benka of Grove City and Noah Smith of Ringgold will challenge Hockenbury and look to stay strong after their own successful starts of the season. Benka’s Grove City squad were excellent in their lone invitational appearance, which was a victory at Red White and Blue. They placed five in the top 15 in the AA division on that day. Another strong performance like that will make them tough to beat. Bishop Shanahan is coming off of a win at Rose Tree Park and have quickly put themselves in the conversation for District 1 AA glory. Seamus Breslin will lead the team in green. Mount Carmel finished in the top 7 at Desales last week, with Holy Ghost Prep the only AA squad to beat them. A solid top two finished in the top 20 in that race and they will look to duplicate that success on Saturday. The Gold race will be the highly anticipated matchup between North Allegheny and Cardinal O’Hara. Both teams are coming off tough races last week, so a win would be a big boost going forward. North Allegheny’s 1-2 punch of Matt McGoey and Hunter Wharrey have not finished worse than 3rd in any race so far. If the rest of the squad closes the gap on those two, they will be tough to beat. O’Hara has had great success at this meet and will be looking for more of the same after a runner up finish at Briarwood. Kevin James will challenge up front with McGoey and Wharrey, while Jake Brophy of Central Bucks East will also duke it out with the black and gold combo. State College and Mount Lebanon will look to make a name for themselves against two of PA’s biggest teams. Maryland AAA Champions Severna Park returns to PA after winning PTXC 6 two weeks ago.
Girls The white race will have a great matchup at the top with Class A state champion Marianne Abdalah of Vincentian Academy dueling with Mackenzie Greenfield and Lexi Walsh of Class A team champions Holy Cross. Abdalah was victorious at Slippery Rock last weekend, while Greenfield was a big winner at Northampton two weeks ago, and her teammate Walsh was under 19 minutes. A win for any of these competitors will be a huge boost to their championship aspirations. Greenfield’s Holy Cross team were very impressive in their victory at Northampton. The champions are the only team in Class A with two sub 19 minute runners. Penns Valley could have a top three can mix it up with Holy Cross, with Alyssa Limbaugh leading the way. In the blue race, Villa Maria Academy could send a big statement to the rest of the division with a victory on Saturday. The District 10 champions have been solid in the early going, finishing 2nd overall at Red White and Blue and Slippery Rock behind only Mount Lebanon. The core of Claire Brown and Grace Trucilla have been boosted by newcomer Hannah Ricci. Northwestern Lehigh have been impressive on the other side of the state, recently finishing 2nd at the Centaur Invitational behind Parkland. They have a 42 second spread with all five breaking 21 minutes this season. The individual race for gold should be a close one. Hannah Ricci of Villa Maria Academy has been one of the top freshmen this season, helping teammate Claire Brown at the front of races. Claudia and Gabrielle Sacks of Allentown Central Catholic are the latest 1-2 punch looking to make a splash. Jenna Farmer of Lewisburg will also be in the mix. GOLD RACE PREVIEW BY BILL COREN TEAMS---There are 7 Teams that could be up there at the always tough “STATES” course. The favorites are in alphabetical order--CARDINAL OHARA, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST, GREAT VALLEY, MOUNT LEBANON, NORTH ALLEGHENY, SENECA VALLEY, and STRATH HAVEN. Here are those 7 teams Invitational results so far this season with last year’s finish here as well. OH(7th 2013)---1st Briarwood Champs CBE---1st Sharp--1st CBE--3rd Briarwood Champs GV---2nd Briarwood Champs MT LEB(2nd 2013)---1st Red,White, Blue--1st Cal.U of P NALL(4th 2013)---2nd Red,White, Blue SENV---3rd Red,White, Blue SH(3rd 2013)---1st Abington--1st Bulldog Small
Even though SH is projected first by the Virtual Meets Rankings, this is based on their fast times at Bulldog. They are a strong team, but it would be a major upset if they actually won this race, especially with their 5th runner pretty far back. SENV is also a long shot. They have a runner who should be Top 10, but the other Top teams appear to be slightly stronger than them. NALL may have the individual race winner, and that 1 point really helps your team score especially in a large, talented field. NALL also is fairly deep, but still look like they are not as strong as the top 4. OH, CBE, GV, and MT LEB appear to be the class of the field!!! All 4 teams have both strong fifths and sixths as well as runners near the front. CBE got out of the gate fast, but stumbled at Briarwood. After a league meet against rival CBW on Weds.,they should be pumped up to climb poop-out hill. GV ran well at Briarwood and their pack is tight. They have experience and veteran girls who have run this course well. MT LEB is unbeaten this year and could start out with as little as 2 points for their #1. Runner-ups last year, they have a strong chance to bring home the gold from the GOLD race. My prediction for the winner will be OH. With 2 freshmen, 2 sophs, and a strong, confident junior they may shortly be able to challenge the UNV and PENNS teams!!!! Their race at Briarwood proved they are the real deal. By the way the freshmen are twins and they are the sister of the junior. This race will be a GREAT one----30 teams and plenty of good runners on a CHALLENGING course!!
INDIVIDUALS-----There are 3 young ladies who could be way out front of the field---Potts(MT LEB (2nd 2013)--Sheva(PENNR)(3rd 2013)--and Davison(NALL)(4th 2013). Potts was 2nd at Red,White, Blue and is very tough! Sheva is undefeated this year, winning at Sharp and PTX6. When she is healthy, she is outstanding. Also, her kick is the best in the field--if she is close her speed will win out. However, the favorite appears to be Davison. 1st at Red, White, Blue with a 17:35!!!! Enough said!! Can she break 18:00 at the Hershey course? We’ll see????? |

Altoona Mt. Lion XC Invitational
The Altoona boys squad were very impressive on their home course, earning the team title by an overwhelming margin with a score of 43 points. Altoona was led by a 1-2 finish winner from Brad Foust (16:20) and Jerrod Sunderland (16:42), which was good enough to beat AA state title contender Will Kachman of Bedford (16:43). Kachman’s performance did lead to a 4th place finish for his team, just behind Central Mountain and Greensburg Central Catholic. For the girls, Governor Mifflin also earned a comfortable team victory, placing four in the top ten overall to knock off Kiski Area 37-80. Governor Mifflin were led by a runner up finish from Ashlie Kline, who ran 19:45, just trailing champion Megan Aller of Kiski Area by 8 seconds. Girls Highlights

PREVIEW Governor Mifflin girls have started the season well, finishing as the top PA team at the Spiked Shoe Invitational last weekend. The team had a 38 second spread with all seven varsity runners breaking 21 minutes. Hannah Mansell leads the team of only two seniors and five underclassmen. Duplicating a 38 second spread will make them tough to beat on Saturday. Kiski Area will be led by Megan Aller and Lauren Smeltzer. Kiski Area is the only other team in the field to have two multiple sub 20 minute runners. Aller will look to earn the win in this meet, with Maura Glennon of Westmont Hilltop and Laurel Moyer of Central Mountain looking to earn a win of their own. In the boys race, Altoona were left reeling after a tough day in the heat at PTXC 6. Saturday's home invitational will be their chance to rebound in their quest to win the District 6 title in 5 weeks time. Brad Foust, Jerrod Sunderland, and Dominic Stroh have all run 16:40 or faster this season. The trio will have to chase down William Kachman of Bedford if they want to add individual gold to their trophy case. Kachman has won both Big Valley and Forest Hills, but has yet to break the 16 minute mark. Saturday could be his day.

Their 2-3 finish was good enough to lead an impressive performance by the AA squad. Quaker Valley scored 83 points to defeat North East and their powerful 1-2 duo of Raechel White (4th) and Kate McIntosh (6th) by almost 70 points. For the boys, Jeff Van Kooten of Pittsburgh Central Catholic had his best performance of the season with a gold medal performance of 15:45.3, the 2nd fastest time run by a PA athlete this weekend. The senior won by a margin of just 8 seconds. Zack Skolnekovich finished 3rd in 16:07.2 to hold off Andrew Maxwell by a tenth of a second. Van Kooten’s performance led his squad to the team title over AA Quaker Valley 85-130, thanks to having three finishers in the top 20 overall.Girls Highlights

PREVIEW The girls race will feature a North Penn team coming off of a 3rd place finish at the Briarwood Championship race last weekend. Phoebe Clowser has been their top runner so far this season, and she will be challenged by Brooke Hutton of Coatesville, who is coming off of a win at the PTXC 6 Blue Race two weeks ago. In the boys race, Coatesville is coming off a narrow 5 point win over Hatboro Horsham at PTXC 6 and will be challenged by Governor Mifflin and their sub 60 second 1-5 spread. Solanco could dominate the front of the race, as Noah Brady, Liam Hodgson, and Kyle Munro have done well running close together under the 16:45 range.

Perkiomen Valley
Casey Comber of Hatboro Horsham continues to improve week after week. After breaking 16 minutes for the first time last week at Desales, Comber bettered that performance with his 3rd win in as many weeks, running 15:48. His victory was by a margin of 26 seconds and puts him in a select class of runners who have broken 16 minutes more than once this season. His teammates followed his lead and earned a team title for their efforts, defeating hosts Perkiomen Valley 37-51. For the girls, Annie Glodek of Perkiomen Valley earned a victory on her home course with a winning time of 19:10, only 2 seconds better than Allison Brunton of Owen J Roberts, and 5 seconds better than Dootleen Joseph of Upper Darby. Glodek led three finishers in the top five to hold off Owen J Roberts 39-45 for the team title. Boys Highlights
