Josh Hoey of Bishop Shanahan was already on another level before the start of his senior indoor season. But Hoey took another giant leap forward during the winter. It ultimately resulted in an indoor national record in the 800 meters. Hoey blasted a time of 1:47.67 to break Robby Andrews' previous record by a second and a half.

Before he heads to Oregon in the fall, Hoey has one more season of outdoor track to go. Hoey ran to the AAA state title with ease last year and then went 1:49.37 to take third at USATF Juniors. If he goes for it, Hoey will be the overwhelming favorite for a repeat state title. But he may be looking more at time this spring, similar to what he did indoors. The national record is 1:46.45, held by Michael Granville since 1996. Once seen as an untouchable record, Hoey's indoor surprise proved that nothing is out of bounds for him. It might take the right race, but Hoey has the talent to take down Granville's time.
