Midseason Report: Sizing Up The Sprints

Who Will Step Up At The Right Time? - Boys 60m

PA State Rankings: 55m | 60m

The State Favorites: Shawn Brown (Central Dauphin East); Daiyaan Hawkins (Haverford School); James Koliyah (Harry S Truman); Austin Montgomery (Norristown); Joseph Piper (Greater Latrobe); Devon Tate (Lower Merion)

Top Medal Contenders: Tyler Byrd (Bishop McDevitt); Savion Hebron (Neshaminy); Tymir Jackson (Overbrook); Eric Kirk (Coatesville); Dejon Manning (J.P. McCaskey); Ezra Mellinger (Lampeter Strasburg); Donovan Sanders (Girard College); Davon Tate (Lower Merion); Tyeshawn Worrell (Chambersburg)

Sizing It Up: With no boys returning to the fold this season with times under 7.00 in the 60 meters from last winter, we figured it would take some breakthrough performers to in the state's fastest event. And the line is getting long here.

So far this winter, 5 boys have already run sub-7 and a number have added sub-7 converted 55 meter times. There are no dark horses in this event, though -- just contenders. Hawkins, the top breakthrough sprinter of the season holds the PA#1 spot at 6.92 (also a US#19). He may be the favorite for now, but Montgomery (a big winner at the New Balance Games last week), Tate, Brown, Koliyah, and Piper (another big breakthrough) have a lot to give as well.

A lot can change in a month until the state meet, but this event will likely come down to who can best handle the 3 rounds of 60m races at Penn State -- no easy task for even the fastest of sprinters.
