9. Girls 400 - Conteh wins indoor 400m debut
One of the fastest rising sprint stars in Pennsylvania over the last year has been Margaret Conteh of Girard College. Thelma Davies is off at LSU, but Conteh is keeping the sprint talent churning at Girard. The junior, who was second in the state in Class AA in the 400 meters last spring, made her 400 meter indoor debut on Saturday.
She didn't disappoint, running 58.01 for the win. After going out hard, Conteh maintained the lead and held off a good challenge from South Fayette's Amy Allen to capture the victory. Conteh's 58.01 is a PA No. 4 performance on the season. Allen, who is having a very strong season, ended up second in 58.90, just a hundreth off her season best from a week prior at SPIRE. She's currently PA No. 9.
Saturday's race at PSU featured a pair of girls who will be right in the hunt for high finishes when we return to State College for the indoor state meet in March.
