Saturday's PTFCA Indoor Track Carnival was filled with some great performances all over the track and field. But perhaps the most exciting event of the day came in the girls' mile, as some of the state's top milers battled it out for the top spot.
In the end, it was Wilson sophomore Caryn Rippey that came out on top, putting down a strong kick to take the win, nipping Elizabethtown Area senior Katie Locker at the line.
Heading into the last lap, Locker made her move to the lead, passing Claire Zubey of Owen J. Roberts. Those two had opened up a gap on Rippey, who sat in third. It looked like it was going to be a race for the win between Locker and Zubey.
But Rippey wasn't about to go down without a fight.
PLACE | ATHLETE | TEAM | RESULT | WIND | H# | |||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Caryn Rippey | 10 | Wilson (3) | 5:06.27 | 3 | |||
2 | Katie Locker | 12 | Elizabethtown Area | 5:06.29 | 3 | |||
3 | Claire Zubey | 9 | Owen J. Roberts | 5:08.56 | 3 | |||
4 | Kiersten Lloyd | 12 | Red Lion | 5:14.24 | 3 | |||
5 | Sarah Hurst | 11 | Lower Merion | 5:18.77 | 3 |
Rippey stayed in the hunt, passing Zubey around the final bend then looked to make her way up to Locker. She did just that and the District 3 opponents were stride-for-stride for the closing meters. Ultimately it was Rippey that got the advantage on the lean at the end.
Rippey clocked a PA No. 7 time of 5:06.27, while Locker was second in a PA No. 8 time of 5:06.29 -- just .02 separated the two. Zubey, just a freshman, hung on for third in 5:08.56, a PA No. 9 clocking.
