AA Girls 400m Preview
Margaret Conteh of Girard College put it all together in the 400 meters at the District 1 Championships on Friday. She was already having a strong season, but then the senior put down a tremendous 53.88 to claim the district title. That's the fastest time in the state, regardless of classification and a US#12 time.
Now Conteh will aim to win her first state title on Friday. She will be the overwhelming favorite in the 400 after her big statement at districts. Mykala Perry's 2019 meet record of 54.40 is certainly in danger. Conteh was second in Perry's record-setting run. Now the senior Conteh will aim to put her name in the program.
This field is very solid after Conteh, though. Lily Saul of Montoursville just keeps getting better and better and she put down a big PR of 56.19 to win the District 4 title on Saturday -- over a second improvement for the junior. She will look to drop even more time in the fast heat on Friday. Speaking of big PRs, Mara Whalen of Fort Cherry dropped some major time at WPIALs -- clocking a 57.03 for the district title. Look for her to be right in the mix for another great time at Shippensburg.
Lewisburg's Elena Malone and North Catholic's Tara Lucot are a pair of district runners-up that will be in the fast section on Saturday. Both went sub-59 this past week and could be looking to drop even more time. District 3 champion Madison Ziska of Schuylkill Valley has a 58.28 to her name this spring and she should be right up there. Lauren Shaffer of Portage Area won District 6 and will look to dip under 59 on Friday.
