PIAA States Preview: Girls' Sprints & Hurdles

AA Girls 300m Hurdles Preview

Nora Johns of Quaker Valley made a huge statement with a big race in the 300 meter hurdles at the WPIAL Championships. The sophomore put down nearly a two second PR to claim the District 7 title with a 45.01 at Slippery Rock for the win. That's the fastest AA time in the state so far this season, and Johns may have asserted herself as the favorite with that performance.

But Saint Joseph's Catholic Academy's Clare Marsh will be a tough one to beat at the state meet. The senior was third in the state as a sophomore two years ago and has been the most consistent performer in the state in the intermediate hurdles. She has gone sub-46 five times this spring, including a best of 45.23 at the Roddick Invite on the same track where she'll return on Friday. She went 45.75 to win the District 6 crown. Expect a tight battle between the veteran Marsh and the upstart Johns in what will be a can't-miss race.

Looking to get in the mix will be the Lewisburg duo of Siena Brazier and Madeline Ikeler. Brazier ran 46.00 to win the District 4 title, but not far behind was Ikeler, who went 46.54. Those teammates will be the third and fourth seeds entering Friday, looking to work off each other to make a run at the two favorites.

California Area's Makayla Boda is the only other girl in the field to have run sub-47 this spring; she went 46.93 to claim second to Johns at WPIALs. She will have her sights set on a high finish.
