AAA Girls 100m Preview
It's a new era in the girls' sprints in Pennsylvania, particularly in the 100 meters. There are no returning finalists from two years ago, the last time there was an outdoor state meet. But there is a talented bunch of girls that have emerged as top sprinters.
We'll start with the freshman, Laila Campbell of Spring Grove. The ninth grader has made her presence felt in her first high school season, clocking the only sub-12 time of the season by a PIAA athlete. Campbell went 11.97 at YAIAAs, and then added a 12.00 to win the District 3 title this past week during a three-win meet. She's got the poise of a veteran and will look to claim her first state title.
There's a good group of challengers, though, headed up by Southern Lehigh's Madison Trout. After some quick dual meet performances, Trout put down an impressive 12.08 this past week to take the District 11 title. The junior has gotten much faster than two years ago and will shoot for the state crown.
The always-strong District 1 contingent is looming, too. Downingtown West's Jada Alston won the D1 title, closely followed by her Whippet teammate Maya Tucker. Those two will be hungry in this field for high finishes. Avon Grove's Molly O'Connor ran the fastest time of the day at D1, a 12.17 in the prelims. She will be one to watch as well.
After that, WPIAL champion Dani Prunzik has been impressive all season long. She went 12.33 to win at D7 last week. Jim Thorpe freshman Kaila O'Connor popped a huge PR of 12.30 in the prelims at D11, before taking second to Trout in the final. Look for this ninth grader to make some noise.
District 2 champ Jessica Cervenak of Tunkhannock, District 12 champion Taylor Johnson of Bonner-Prendie, District 5 champion Hailey Rios of Somerset, Jael Sykes of North Penn, and Paige Drake of Central Valley are among the other standouts in the AAA 100.
Campbell and Trout look to be the two favorites, but this field also has a wide open feel to it.
