AA Girls Long Jump Preview
Sarah Wagner had been building to last week's performance for the past couple of weeks. After a number of jumps in the high 17-foot range, the North Schuylkill senior got out over 18 feet, leaping 18-2 to win the District 11 title. Now Wagner will look to keep her hot streak going, and turn it into a AA state title on Friday.
Wagner has been the state's mist consistent performer in the long jump, and has faced good competition along the way that will make her tough to beat at Shippensburg. But there are a number of girls who will have a shot at the win.
The best jump in AA this season belongs to Allegheny Clarion Valley's Baylee Blauser, who leapt 18-3.5 in a dual meet. Blauser qualified for the state meet with a leap of 15-7.75, but has reportedly been dealing with an ankle injury. If healthy, Blauser will look to summon a similar leap to the won she put down earlier this season and make a run at the win.
Three other girls in this field have best jumps this spring in the high 17-foot range. Shenango's Haley Morgan (17-11 SB), Schuylkill Valley's Madison Ziska (17-10.5), and Loyalsock's Sophia Gardner (17-9.75). Gardner comes in seeded second behind Wagner after her nice PR to win the District 4 title. She'll be looking to keep the AA state title in Loyalsock's possession after Hailey Zurich won the event in 2019. Gardner was fourth that year.
Saint Basil's Sasha Lee leapt a season best of 17-4.25. She will be a strong contender after placing fifth two years ago at the state meet. Mohawk's Nadia Lape, McGuffey's Clara Barr, and Clarion Limestone's Brooke Kessler are the three others in this field with season best leaps over 17 feet that will aim to get on the medal stand and possibly pop a big one.
