AA Girls 3200m Preview
The first event of the PIAA State Championships will bring a marquee matchup to Shippensburg with the AA 3200 meters. Brownsville Area's Jolena Quarzo will go up against North Schuylkill's Cori McCormick in a race that will include a number of others contenders.
Quarzo, the WPIAL champion, has run a best of 10:39.69 this spring, the fourth fastest time in PA regardless of classification. McCormick, the District 11 champion, has a season best of 10:47.95, which she ran to win the Schuylkill League. They are the only two in AA with sub-11 times this season.
Quarzo will look to keep the title in her family; two years ago her older sister Gionna -- now at NC State -- ran to the AA state title and a meet record of 10:25.91. McCormick, then a sophomore, was third in that race. Quarzo and McCormick are the favorites, but plenty of others will be looking to join the party.
Conneaut Area's Meaera Shannon comes in as the No. 3 seed and will be a factor in this race. The senior went 11:00 at Pine-Richland earlier this season and captured the District 10 this past week. She's in a good spot to make a run at a big finish to her high school career. District 6 champion Anna Stitzer of Penns Valley and District 3 winner Grace Kuhn of Wyomissing are coming off solid wins this past week and will also be right in the fight for high finishes.
Sharon's Gianna Labbiento, an experienced veteran, is never one to count out. She was second to Shannon in District 10. Central Cambria's Annaliese Niebauer and Danville Area's Grace Petrick are among the other girls looking to get on the podium in this race.
Friday morning will bring some early fireworks and the first state title of the weekend given out will have to be hard earned.
