AA Girls Javelin Preview
Two years ago, sophomore Maryann Ackerman of Slippery Rock Area placed second in the AA girls javelin at the state meet, just about three inches off the state title. Last year was lost to the pandemic, but Ackerman -- now a senior -- has returned and will be looking to claim the state title that has likely been on her mind for two years now.
It's been a big season for Ackerman, who has hit 140 feet twice. The most recent one came on Saturday to win the District 10 title with a best of 140-4. She comes in as the top-ranked AA girl. Her experience on the big stage will be crucial as she looks to get that state title once and for all.
But this competition will be close. Ackerman's D10 counterpart Audrey Friedman is having a terrific season. The junior was second to Ackerman in D10 and has a season best of 138-11. Up until Saturday's defeat, Friedman was unbeaten on the season. It should be a great matchup on that all-weather runway at Ship.
Mount Carmel's Lauren Shedleski can't be slept on either in this field. She's been throwing great over the last month, launching a best of 135-7. She's thrown over 130 two other times, including a 132-11 to win the District 4 title. The senior is a contender here, too.
Karns City's Ashley Fox (129-9) and Chestnut Ridge's Belle Bosch (128-11 SB) are a pair of girls right on the cusp of 130 that will look for a big day at Ship.
