AAA Girls Javelin Preview
Taylor Ciccolini will look to keep the state title in the family on Saturday. At the state meet in 2019, Skyler Ciccolini -- who threw the second best javelin mark in American high school history -- won the AAA state crown. Last year was a lost year due to the pandemic, but the younger Ciccolini, Taylor, a senior at Mifflin County, will look to retain the title for her family.
Ciccolini was third at the state meet two years ago. She comes in at PA No. 1 with a season best of 146-11. The Mid-Penn and District 6 champion will be closely challenged by a number of talented girls in this field.
Among them is Renny Murphy of Berwick. The senior launched a nice PR of 145-7 to win the District 2 crown last week. She's got experience, too; she was seventh two years ago at the state meet. Murphy is talented, and the battle between her and Ciccolini could come down to who has their best on the right day.
The D2 contingent after Murphy is impressive, though, too. Hazleton's Abbey Hengst tossed a PR of 137-0 to take second to Murphy at North Pocono last week. She will enter as the No. 2 seed, even ahead of Ciccolini. Another Berwick girls -- Allie Melchiorre -- turned in a big performance at D2, tossing 134-4 which will make her a contender, too.
Daniel Boone's Hannah Cassner, Nazareth Area's Kelly Leszcynski, and Liberty's Brylee Tereska are among the others to keep an eye on in this deep AAA javelin field.
