Tasty Race Of The Week: A 4x4 Barnburner

Perhaps the most thrilling moment of Saturday's TFCAofGP Meet #7 came in the final race of the entire meet, the 4x400m relay.

It turned into a battle between a pair of teams that historically are no stranger to running fast times in the 4x4: Central Bucks West and Penn Wood.

After the first two exchanges, the teams were neck and neck, putting some space on the rest of the field. Coming into the final exchange, Penn Wood held a small advantage on West. West's Carter Fitzgerald, who won the 800m earlier in the meet in impressive fashion, put up a good challenge, but was unable to make the pass on the outside through three curves.

Then on the fourth and final curve, Fitzgerald finally made the pass and held on in the final stretch to give CB West the win in 3:31.64. Penn Wood was a close second in 3:32.17. Central Bucks South battled well and took third in 3:33.99.

The race was everything we love about the 4x4!

Penn Wood, however, still retains the state lead in the event with a 3:26.27 from earlier in the season from the Coaches Hall Of Fame Invitational on the banked track Armory. Butler is a close PA No. 2 with a 3:26.90. CB West, meanwhile, moved up to PA No. 7 with its TFCAofGP race on Saturday.

Like Saturday's meet, the race for the top spot at the state meet in about three weeks time should be a tight one to close out the meet. There's still a lot of time until then.
