18th Carlisle High School Invitational

Boys Race Story by CORY MULL
PennTrackXC.com
As quickly as the gun went off on Saturday in the Boy’s Challenge race during the 18th annual Carlisle High Reebook Meet of Champions, one thing was quickly understood.
Don’t get caught behind.
As a result of Downingtown West junior Quinn Devlin (center #688) stepping on the gas from the very beginning, a definitive pack was forced to mesh early and ultimately did hold strong until the final turn at the Carlisle High course.
But that’s where lung capacity took over as Washingtonville of New York senior Martin Hehir and Altoona Area senior Wade Endress pressed forward.
Hehir, a eighth-place finisher in last year’s race, barely outstretched Endress in the final 800 meters as he secured a win in 15:40, only three seconds better than Endress (15:43).
“We were side-by-side coming into the final hill and then that’s where I gave it all I had,” said Hehir, who recorded his career best time with the finish.
(Carlisle photos by Megan Clugh)
“I really just started getting a nice kick this last year,“ Hehir continued. “I ran track and I ran a good mile. And that’s where my kicks started coming in.”
LaSalle College’s Tom Trainer was third in 15:46, North Allegheny’s Ryan Gil was fourth in 15:55 and Devlin was a surprising fifth in 15:57.
Devlin‘s brazen lead-off was actually the peculiar move of the day, considering he wasn‘t projected to finish in the top 10. For those expected to contend early, like Endress and Gil, Devlin forced strategy early and ultimately changed the dynamic of the race.
Endress had figured the pace would gradually pick-up with each passing mile covered. But he found out very soon that there was no time to waste.
“I think we went out 4:55 for the first mile, so it wasn’t crazy fast, but it was a good pace,“ Endress said. “Quinn Devlin took it out early and I was a little surprised. I was like OK.”
And during that initial scram toward the lead-pack nowhere to be found, at least in Endress’ sightline, was Gil, who finished fifth in last year’s race and was the highest placer returning.
That soon changed, but only at the mile and a half mark.
“I didn’t see Gil at all, so I was getting a little worried,” Endress said. “But finally about a mile and half, there he is, right on my shoulder. He moved up as some kids flip-flopped.”
Gil inserted himself among the tight throng and stayed with the group until the last 800 meters, but that’s when Hehir shifted into another gear.
“About 400 or 500 to go, I saw Gil slowly slip back to my left and I stepped up and was with Martin side-by-side on the hill,” Endress said. “ But he got me on the downhill.”
Grove City Area’s Jacob Kildoo was sixth in 15:58, Central Dauphin’s Ed Schrom was seventh in 16:06 and Downingtown West’s Ian Barnhill was eighth in 16:11.
Rounding out the top 10 were Sam Hibbs of Hatboro-Horsham (16:13) and Ryan Hartzel of Cumberland Valley (16:14).
And yet, while Gil was ultimately upended in the race, the day didn’t prove to be a total disaster. That’s because North Allegheny, backed by five runners placing within the top 40, made a giant leap in the right direction by beating Altoona.
North Allegheny sewed up 114 points to Altoona’s 161. Cumberland Valley was third with 226 points.
“I am not making excuses at all, because that’s not our style,“ Altoona head coach Lee Baranik said. “But our fifth guy (Patrick Reade) is in a boot. He’s hurt and we missed him greatly today.”
Champions Race:
Red Lion’s Matthew Croft picked up a win in the Boys’ Champions race, outlasting Kutztown senior Nathan Noll at the finish line en route to a 16:40. Noll followed two seconds later.
In third was Palmyra’s Connor Strynkowski (16:43) and State College’s Paul Crowe was fourth (16:56).
In Crowe’s case, he headlined a strong State College lineup that placed its five runners in the top 35. The team picked up the Champions team title, accruing 107 points to Lancaster Mennonite’s 176. Annville-Cleona was third with 182 points.
Upper Dublin paired back-to-back finishers at five and six with Peter Schartel (16:59) and Francis Ferruzzi (17:01) before Dallastown’s Adam Katora came in seventh (17:03) and Waynesboro’s Kyle Phillips was eighth (17:05).
Rounding out the top 10 were Jared Schatz of Lancaster Mennonite (17:05) and William Cather of State College (17:05).
Girls Race Story by CORY MULL
PennTrackXC.com
The senior recognized the freshman out of respect.
Because it wasn’t so long ago that Cumberland Valley senior Leigha Anderson was in the same position Lower Dauphin freshman DeeDee Shea is in right now.
Talented, gifted, ready to make a name for herself.
“Being a freshman and coming in and taking control of everything, that’s where she’s at right now,” Anderson said after winning the Girls’ Challenge race at the 18th annual Carlisle High Cross Country Reebook Meet of Champions on Saturday.
At least for one more day, Anderson still has control.
She was the overwhelming favorite to repeat her title from a year ago and didn’t disappoint, leading the entire way en route to a time of 18:57, which was 34 seconds slower than her race in 2009.
Shea was a close second, registering a time of 19:06, followed by Washingtonville’s Lauren Hehir in third (19:13) and Central York’s Kelsey Ibarra in fourth (19:25).
Any particular reason for the time?
“I think the races were just different between now and last year,” Anderson said. “So I think that’s why.”
Overall, though, the underclassmen are catching up. Shea, Ibarra and fifth-place Tessa Mundell of Governor Mifflin all recorded places among the top five.
And all three compete within District 3.
But while that may worry Anderson in the long run, it was of no concern Saturday. Anderson led from start to finish, looking strong throughout as she hit another gear the last 800 meters.
“(My coach) just kind of let me do my own thing,” Anderson said. “He was just at the end telling me to go, because I don’t think I realized how close DeeDee was behind me.”
North Allegheny dominated in the team standings, taking the team title behind five runners in the top 20 and seven in the top 30.
Caitlyn Carmody, Lizzie Appleton and Eleni Mermigas went 6-7-8 en route to an effective display of pack running. North Allegheny scored 56 total points, 48 better than the second-place finisher, State College.
Continuing in their impressive team standing, Lower Dauphin finished third with 149 points. Weeks earlier, the Falcons had surprised at the PTXC2, finishing third among a similar crop of talented teams.
At that point, Falcons’ second-year head coach John Butler was amazed at how well his lineup produced. While experienced, they weren’t proven through their lineup.
But Saturday proved enough to Butler that he believed good things were bound to happen in the future.
“What this finish does is it confirms that we belong where we thought we’d be,“ Butler said. “Not only now can we talk about making states, but we’re right up there with possible a district title.”
In District 3, Lower Dauphin was projected to be behind the likes of Cumberland Valley, which finished in seventh on Saturday. But with a performance like this, Butler eyes more.
“If you start looking at all the teams, you start to realize that the difference between being a district champion and not making the state meet could be 11, 12 points,” Butler said.
“At the same time, you always have to keep one eye on reality. You have to keep working hard, because if you go to districts and finish sixth and don’t make it, this was for nothing.”
Rounding out the top 10 were Tatum Delbosco of State College (19:58) and Nikki Garns of Greencastle-Antrim (20:01).
Champions Race:
Tamaqua junior Amber Carroll won in 19:41.44, five seconds up on fellow junior, Sarah Holl of Upper Dublin.
Mount Lebanon placed two in the top ten, and four in the top 23 to secure the team title with 106 points. Palmyra was second at 117. Jillian Hunsberger lead Lebo with her 7th place 20:39.72, followed by Callie Gunzenhauser at 9th in 20:47.23; Katelyn Walsh at 13th in 20:51.27 andDhannon Moorhead in 3rd at 21:06.78. Julia Sraltari rounded out the scoring with 56 points with her 22:05.32.
Rounding out the top ten were Vivien Hsstings, Agnes Irwin (20:23.04), Kaylin Delvecchio, Northern, (20:25.92), Rachel Kreiger, East Pennsboro (20:27.73), Kate Yoh, Conrad Weiser (20:34.85), Makena Felts, Red Land (20:41.93), snd Aurora Janes, Upper Dublin (20:47.60).
In the Boys Junior Varsity race, Vince Tonza of North Allegheny won in 17:27.10.
And in the Girls Junior Varsity race, it was nearly a clearn sweep for North Allegheny (Chambersburg junior Bailynne Miller broke up the top seven NA runners with a 4th place 21:38).
The compression from 1-5 was just 22 seconds, and a mere 34 seconds from 1-7. Shannon Wagner was 1st (21:18.83), 2nd Caroline Cwalina (21:20.92), 3rd Kim Goehring (21:22.78), 5th Catherine Baird (21:39.40), 6th Alens Greco (21:40.21), 7th Gabi Gigliotti (21:46.70), 8th Alex Grese (21:52.51).
Flash: Girls Challenge: Cumberland Valley senior Leigha Anderson defended her Carlisle Inv title, going 18:57, with Lower Dauphin freshman DeeDee Shea second. North Allegheny won the team title with 56 points - State College was 2nd with 104, and Lower Dauphin 3rd with 149.
Flash: Boys Challenge: Wade Endress took 2nd overall in 15:43. Minus their #5, who is out temporarily, Altoona took 2nd to North Allegheny 114 to 161. North Allegheny's Ryan Gil took 4th overall. Mile-and-a-half leader Quinn Deviln of Downingtown West was 5th. Washingtonville NY senior won Carlisle Challenge race in 15:40 by 3 seconds.

4th PIAA Foundation XC Invitational
Meet Summary by Lex Mercado
September 25, 2010 felt more like July 25 as the heat and humidity was scorching down on the competitors at Hershey Park. Many teams and athletes shined as brightly as the sun with their strong performances and left the course feeling like contenders for bigger things come November 6.
Varsity Girls Gold Race
(Finish photos by Timothy O'Dowd, Irishrunner.com)
Another Saturday, another big day for Sara Sargent. The Pennsbury superstar repeated the same race strategy she used at this meet a year ago. She went out aggresively and dared her competition to try and run with her. "The hills were exactely how I remembered them to be, really tough, but you can use them to your advantage." Victoria Gerlach of Pennridge was the lone challenger to Sargent, and as the race progressed, Gerlach looked to close the gap that started out so large at 600 meters. But with every turn and every hill, Sargent never let up her blistering pace and came away with her 3rd victory of the season, winning the varsity gold race in 18:51. Gerlach ran a personal best on this course of 18:58, which is a very strong time at any time of the year for this course.
Sargent's teammates also had a strong performance themselves. After a big 2nd place finish at Briarwood last week behind national top ten squad Tatnall (DE), Pennsbury did not show any ill effects from that performance and made their case once again as the team to beat in PA. The top ranked Falcons placed their scoring five in the top 30, including two in the top five to double up PA#9 Liberty 78-154. At the midway point of the 2010 season, Pennsbury has let to lose to PA squad and no PA squad has come within 53 points of them in any invitational. Council Rock North was 3rd with 166, Haverford Township was 4th with 175, and Boyertown was 5th with 190 points.
Lindsay Rheiner of Council Rock North led the chase pack behind Gerlach and finished 3rd in 19:13. A resurging Jess Cygan of Liberty went for her 4th straight win and 5th overall on this course but had to settle for 4th in 19:21, Ann Herman of Pennsbury was 5th in 19:28, looking as strong and as healthy as she has ever been. Liz Chikotas of newly promoted Saucon Valley was 6th in 19:44, Lauren Mills of Unionville was 7th in 19:53, Caitlyn Sheva of Pennridge was the last girl to crack to minutes in the field with her 8th place mark of 19:58. Sohpia Meehan was 9th in 20:03 and wrapping up the top ten was Caitlin Perry of Northampton in a time of 20:04.
Varsity Girls Blue Race
Leah Anne Wirfel has had some great days and some bad days on this course. At this meet last year she was the champion of the varsity blue race and convinced many people that day that she was going to be a top contender to return in November and leave as AA state champion. Unfortunately it didn't work out for her on that day and she made the medal stand with a 24th place finish. "I wanted to come and get my confidence up on this course again and I did that."
But last year she was a junior and now as a senior she has her 2nd opportunity to earn that gold medal. In the beaming sunshine, she looked like the Wirfel of last September, leading the pack early and widening her gap with each turn and each hill. She ran like a veteran of the course and gave her competition no chance of catching her. Wirfel ran a confident and victorious 19:37 and was the only girl to break 20 in the varsity blue race.
Kendall Seymour of 3 time defending state champion Central Cambria led the chase pack with her runner up time of 20:05. Megan McGarrity of Saint Basil continued her good start of the season with 3rd place in a time of 20:11. Emma Mahony of Villa Joseph Marie was 4th with a time of 20:17. Shannon Wright of Lewisburg led a strong performance by her team with her 5th place mark of 20:21, Susan Learn of Mansfield was 6th in 20:34, just beating out Rachel Hilliard (7th in 20:35). Rounding out the top ten were Alex Zanella of Southern Fulton (20:42), Rachel Sowinski of Holy Redeemer (9th in 20:45) and Emily Sutton of Lake Lehman (10th in 20:47).
Unlike the varsity gold race, the varsity blue race featured many surprises in the team standings. Saint Basil Academy was the only team to place five inside the top 50 and came away with the 1st place trophy with 150 points. Holy Redeemer placed three in the top 30 to place 2nd with 166. Basil's district rival Villa Joseph Marie was 3rd with 192 points (and only one team from district 1 in AA will return November 6), Lewisburg surprised many with their 4th place finish with 196 points, and the three time defending champion in AA Central Cambria was 5th with 198 points despite placing two in the top 13. One thing this race did was totally open up the competition in AA girls for 2010. The 2nd half of the season should be fun to watch!
From the here's something you don't see everyday department, in the girls JV race, Katie Rodden of Archbishop Carroll earned the victory with a time of 20:01. In the varsity gold race, that would have earned her 9th place.
Varsity Boys Gold Race
In the guys gold race, big statement were made by both the team winner and the individual winner.
Whitehall's Matt Kacyon was the defending champion coming into the race and he was also 17th in AAA at states last year. "My strategy was to stay up front with the first pack, decided to make my break on the 3rd mile up the last hill."
Brett Kelly of Boyertown had one invitational victory already this season and he was 3rd at this race last year. The two of them waged a back and forth battle throughout the entire race. The two of them separated themselves early and seemed to be glued to each other for most of the race. Wherever Kacyon was, Kelly was right behind him or right next to him. They were together crossing the bridge, they were together at two miles, and they were together at the Aloha hills. But as they were returning back to the bridge, Kacyon showed his experience over the junior and came away with a win in 16:25. Kelly would wind up running 16:40 for 2nd.
Behind those two was a strong team performance from PA#5's Cardinal O'Hara. At 600 meters, there was a girls team asking each other "Who is O'Hara?" By the time the race was over, they had a really good idea.
Cardinal O'Hara ran like a team that knows what it takes to win, using strong pack running in the middle of their top seven to control the race. At 600 meters, they had six in the top 20. At the bridge, they had six in the top 15, with 3-6 running four abreast. At the Aloha Hills, they were still inside the top 15 and tackled all the hills with great strength and confidence. When it was all said and done, their score read 39 points and they won by 104 points!!! But here's the best part: O'Hara had a 1-5 spread of 34 seconds and a 1-6 spread of 47 seconds! They had five in the top 12 and six in the top 17 overall. Only one team in the field had two in the top 17!
Chris Garrity ran 17:03 for 4th, Mile Bilotta ran 17:19 for 6th, Dan Savage ran 17:23 for 7th, Christian Ostroski ran 17:29 for 10th, Chris Pastore ran 17:36 for 12th and Mike Hess ran 17:50 for 17th. Only two seniors are in that top six with two juniors and two sophomores contributing to the cause.
Other top ten finishers included Bradon Taylor of Kennard-Dale (3rd in 17:00), Alex Cicchitti of William Tennent (5th in 17:06), Zach Musselman of Methacton (8th in 17:23) and Thomas Darlington of Liberty (9th in 17:27).
Varsity Boys Blue Race
The Blue race gave us a great four way battle in the front that provided plenty of excitement for the spectators out on the course. After seeing two girls races that featured dominant performances by superstar runners, this race featured four guys looking to put themselves on the map.
At 600 meters, the four front runners separated themselves and went to work. The four of them exchanged the lead for most of the race and each runner responded to everyone's move on every hill. But as in every race on this day, when the race returned to the bridge, the creams of the crop would separate themselves. Nate Tallada of Saegertown and Alex Woodrow of Marion Center went to the very end to determine the winner, and Tallada came away the winner in 16:54 with Woodrow finishing 2nd in 16:57. Curt Jewett of Northeast Bradford, who spent most of the race anchoring the four man pack, earned 3rd place in 17:12, Kelby Mullen of Sullivan County got himself into the mix near the end and earned 4th place for his efforts in 17:13. Behind them was the chase pack separated by 11 seconds. Chris Monahan of Mount Carmel led that pack at the finish line in 17:23 for 5th.
Team wise, AA PA#3 Northeast Bradford had four in the top 14 separated by 31 seconds to easily take the team title with 66 points over Holy Redeemer's 127. Danville Area was 3rd with 193.
Junior Varsity Races: Central Columbia runner Donny Scatena, and two of his teammates were moved from the Blue Race results to Junior Varsity after running the race despite instructions from the Meet Clerk that only full teams were permitted to participate in the seeded Varsity Races. His time of 17:10 placed him third in the Blue Race. Junior Jake Saccetti of Cardinal O'Hara was the actual winner of the Junior Varsity race, going 18:36. Manheim Township won the JV team title with 32 points behind the 2nd place finish of Tyler Miller in 18:41.
In the Girls' Junior Varsity, Cardinal O'Hara won with 53 points, as freshmen Erin Dolan was 3rd in 22:14 and Grace Shaller was 6th in 22:48. Katie Rodde, an Archbishop Carroll senior, took the 1st place title in 20:01. That would have placed her 9th in the Gold Race.
Flash Updates:
MileSplit now on-site with Aaron Rich. It is a beautiful, cool morning here. Perfect for cross country. The finish line generators just started humming and the team tents are being raised.

Still 78 degrees. (interestingly, the same order as the first race of the year, the Viking Invitational on September 3. Pennsbury wins the team title with 78 points.
Boys Blue: Saegertown junior Nate Tallada - a two-time AA state medalist on the course - captured the race after emerging from a four-man battle.
Boys Gold: Whitehall senior Matt Kacyon defended his PIAA Foundation title, holding off Boyertown junior Brett Kelly. Cardinal O'Hara looked strong, placing five in top 25.
