SPRINTS/HURDLES
Watch out for Carver Engineering & Sciences’ Cierra White in the 100 meter dash. The 2010 winner is back and perhaps better than ever as she holds the PA#1 time with a 11.79. It’s her race to lose, essentially, as she needs to outwork upstarts like Lackawanna Trail’s Lauren Ellsworth (12.22), Christopher Dock’s Karli Balmer (12.36) and Rochester’s Erikka Williams (12.38). West Catholic’s Jada Steward (12.42) could present White with the biggest threat. She was second last year in the final’s to White, though might need to race toe-to-toe with the Carver standout if there’s to be any chance.
It’s the same story in the 200 meter dash, as Cierra White is the overwhelming favorite to repeat in the event. She is PA#1 with a 23.95, though on her tail is PA#8 Michelle Davis of West Catholic. Davis, last year’s runner-up, ran a season best of 24.85 at the District 12 Championships, which was second to only White. West Catholic teammate Jada Steward could also push White and enters as the third seed. Lanae Newsome is seeded fourth (25.61), Yaneshia Gaston is fifth (25.61) and Imani Harris-Quillen is sixth (25.62).
Three medalists return from 2010 in the 400 meter dash, including runner-up Michelle Davis of West Catholic, who might be looking to pocket her first state quarter-mile state championship after being out of reach a year ago. Davis, currently PA#5 with a time of 55.84, could ultimately be pushed by Lackawanna Trail’s Lauren Ellsworth (57.53) and Swenson’s Imani Harris-Quillen (57.48), though. And Bishop McDevitt’s Yaneshia Gaston, the District 3 winner with a time of 57.79, is in the picture, too. Elk Lake’s Cassie Vanetten finished in eight place in 2010, though is seeded 11th heading into the race.
There isn’t much separation to be found in the 100 meter hurdles as the top seed, Torrey Hollis of Hughesville, enters with a time of 15.14. Fourteen total hurdlers are under 16 seconds, though none have hit below 14 seconds just yet. That could change over the weekend, but for now, we’ll have to wait and see. Paul Roberson’s Shalaya Sidney is the second seed (15.22), GAR Memorial’s Quieterra Gross is the third (15.30) and Milton Area’s Moira Nester is fourth (15.43). Emily Lelis of Springdale is the fifth seed (15.50).
In the 300 meter hurdles, PA#14 Brodie Ercole enters as the top seed with a seed time of 45.32. Three hurdlers have secured times under 46 seconds, including second seed Moira Nester of Milton Area (45.82) and Aisha Newsome of Brookville (45.87). No medalists from 2010 return.

MID-DISTANCE/DISTANCE
Three-time champion Kalyn Fisher of Lewisburg has finally graduated, so that means she’s officially released her stranglehold of the 800 meter run. So where does it go from here? Boiling Springs sophomore and PA#19 Lillie Brown could be the safe pick, as her 2:17.09 in the District 3 Championships gives her the field’s top seed heading into the preliminaries on Friday. But is she the favorite? It’s debatable, but her 2:14.6 solo anchor in helping her team to a district record in the 4x800 puts some nice separation over her competitors. Christopher Dock senior Janine Powis was the runner-up in 2010 and uncorked a 2:13 in the process. Can she recapture a little bit of that magic in the half-mile? She’ll have to improve upon her 2:19.48 seed time in a hurry. Elk County Catholic’s Kennedy Weisner times in at 2:17.84 and is the second seed. Casey Gallaher of Forest Hills is the third seed at 2:18.91. Last year’s fifth-place medalist, Cranberry sophomore Mckenna Spence, could be a real threat at the end of the race. She’s ranked sixth in this race and ran a 2:19.56 in her District 9 Championships. Another medalist from last year (3rd), Homer Center junior Angel Piccirillo has opted to concentrate on the 4x800 and her main event, the 1600. Her 2:10 anchor at District 6 would have changed the dynamic of this race.
Piccirillo does enter as the sixth seed on paper, but the junior and PA#1 is the hands down favorite in the 1,600 meter run. She’s the returning champion from 2010 and pocketed a remarkable 4:47.16c at The Penn Relay Carnival in late April. If she runs anywhere close to her personal record, Piccirillo is almost untouchable. But this race is hard to predict sometimes and she needs to be aware of a few contenders, like PA#10 Caitlin Bungo, last year’s sixth-place finisher, who enters with a seed time of 5:06.46 at the District 7 Championships. Elk County Catholic’s Kennedy Weisner (5:07.26) is also in striking distance, as is South Fayette’s Nicole Hilton (5:06.38).
South Fayette senior Nicole Hilton, PA#9 in the 3,200 meter run, is the sole competitor entering with a time under 11 minutes, so she could be the prohibitive favorite to record her first state title. Hilton, who recorded her 10:57.37 seed time at the District 7 Championships, was the field’s runner-up a year ago and is the only medalist returning from 2010. Northern Bedford’s Maria Snyder (11:17.58) is the second seed, Saint Basil’s Megan McGarrity (11:19.00) is seeded third and Holy Redeemer’s Marissa Duraka enters as fourth. Central Cambria’s Kendall Seymour, 10th a year ago, is seeded fifth and could be a dark horse pick for the title.

RELAYS
Four of the top eight finishers from a year ago return in the 4x100 meter relay. Among them, PA#4 West Catholic is the team with the most to gain, and possibly the most to lose. They’re the defending state champs and lead the pack in 2011 with an impressive 48.05. Swenson Arts & Technology, last year’s runner-up, is this year’s five-seed (49.40). PA#11 Carver Engineering & Sciences, third a year ago, enters as a viable threat as the second seed (48.88). Lewisburg is third (49.28) and Brookville is fourth (49.30).
Five of the top eight medal-winners from 2010 are back in the 4x400 meter relay. Chief among them is PA#5 West Catholic, last year’s champion, which boasts a time of 3:58.70. Threats to challenge are second seed Villa Joseph Marie, third seed Saint Basil Academy and fourth seed Lewisburg.
Just one top eight finisher in the 4x800 meter relay returns from 2010. And PA#19 Boiling Springs, the event’s top seed at 9:29.73, is the only team under 9:30. And they have a 2:10 anchor in sop Lillie Brown. Second seed Saint Basil Academy enters with a time of 9:36.61 and Montoursville is third with a seed time of 9:38.28. Central Cambria, last year’s runner-up, is seeded fourth with a time of 9:43.58. The other returning medalist is Villa Joseph Marie, 4th in 2010.

JUMPS
Seven of the top eight finishers in the high jump from 2010 have graduated, so this year it could be anyone’s event. No leaper has distanced themselves over another by a wide margin. Northwestern senior Nicole Lockard, PA#10, enters as the classes top seed with a height of 5 -5, which she secured at the District 10 championships. But she’s followed closely by district foe and PA#18 Alexandra Schriefer of North East (5-4) and PA#26 Ebony Smith of Eastern Allegheny (5-3). From there, it could be a fight. The next six highest seeds have entry heights of 5-2 and the next 12 are stuck at 5-0. There are only three seniors in the top nine seeds of the event.
In the long jump, the top three seeds have all registered jumps longer than 18 feet. Similarly, they all happen to ranked in the top 10 in PA this season. Perhaps the most interesting tussle could focus around PA#4 Shalaya Sidney of Paul Roberson and PA#5 Erikka Williams of Rochester. Sidney enters with a top seed of 18-5.75 while Williams, last year’s runner-up, owns a mark of 18-5. Williams, though, has been more consistent over her career, having secured three jumps of 18-5 on her resume, including one this past winter at the PTFCA Indoor State Championships. Sidney, meanwhile, recorded her 18-5.75 this past weekend at the District 12 Championships. Third seed and PA#9 Shali Muhammed, a teammate of Sidney’s at Paul Roberson, enters with an 18-2.25. She was eighth last year. Bloomsburg junior Lauren Ball, sixth in 2010, is seeded fourth with a 17-9.
At pole vault, there is no Allison Vanek in 2011, which is to say there is not an overwhelming favorite to win the event. To the contrary, there‘s an interesting selection of balanced talent. Notre Dame Green Pond senior and PA#6 Monica Pechanec enters as the top seed with a mark of 11-9, which she accomplished at the Colonial League Championships. She topped 12-3 indoor at New Balance Nationals. Not far below is second seed and PA#7 Virginia LaMacchia of Central Columbia, last year’s silver medalist, who won the District 4 Championship with a mark of 11-7. In 2010, five tied for fifth place. Four of those same competitors return in 2011, all of which are seeded within the event’s top six seeds. LaMacchia; who cleared 11-9 indoor; is the most accomplished to this point, but PA#11 Hailey Kester of Salisbury Township is the third seed with a mark of 11-6 and PA#15 Vanessa Munley of Riverside (2) enters at a mark of 11-3. Beth Ledford rounds out last year’s medal winners as the sixth seed with a entry height of 11-0.
Richland’s Paige Lumley has always saved her best for last in the triple jump, so perhaps the junior has been waiting for this venue all along. A two-time medalist and a fourth-place finisher in 2010, Lumley enters as the event’s second seed with a 36-6 mark. She’s seven inches behind Brookville sophomore and PA#14 Lanae Newsome. But as a freshman, Lumley leaped to a personal record of 37-5 and as a sophomore, recorded a 37-4.5 mark. Until then, however, it will be Newsome’s event to lose. No other medalists from 2010 return. Third seed Lauren Ball of Bloomsburg enters with a mark of 36-5.50 and she’s followed by freshman teammate Britni Phillips, who sports a 36-1.

THROWS
Elk County Catholic senior and PA#2 Megan Dornish will look to become a repeat title-winner in the shot put, where she is heavily favored with an entry mark of 44-4.75 -- which she first accomplished at the Penn Relay Carnival in April. But watch out for Middletown’s Aubree Ray, PA#8, who has progressively improved over the last month. The senior uncorked a personal record 40-3 over the weekend at the District 3 Championships and was an eighth-place finisher a year ago. Two sophomore Hickory teammates, PA#3 Symone Somerset and PA#11 Taylor Woods, enter as the fourth and fifth seeds, respectively. Somerset, who threw a 42-3 heave at the Mercer County Track and Field Invitational, was fourth in 2010. Mary Newell of Villa Joseph Marie is the event’s third seed with a mark of 38-10.75.
Much like the shot put, it could be a two-way fight in the discus. Although Middletown’s Aubrey Ray, PA#2, is favored with a 139-3, don’t discount Elk County Catholic and PA#5 Megan Dornish, who enters with a 134-10. Both hurlers have been consistently knocking down throws in the 130s, though Ray with more thrust and power. Ray was also a silver-medalist in 2010 (with a heave of 142-3) and could be looking to capture her first state championship. The dark horse could be Hickory sophomore Taylor Woods, who enters as the fourth seed with a 131-03. Her sister, Emily, won in 2010. Hickory teammate, Lauren Lubarski, is seeded third (131-5) while Northern Schuylkill’s Cater Green enters as the fifth seed.
The javelin field opened up significantly when Tamaqua senior Allison Updike, last year’s winner with a heave of 161-2, went down with an knee injury. The University of Georgia commit was the overwhelming favorite to repeat in the event. And without her, it seemed as though the field was up for grabs. But all was not lost for Tamaqua. Sophomore Christine Streisel, who stepped in for Updike after the injury and became the team’s No. 1 thrower, is presumably the event’s favorite. She unleashed a PA#3 153-10 at The Penn Relays Carnival. She comes into the event as the second seed, having thrown a 135-10 at the District 11 Championships. The event’s top seed, PA#8 Jessica Delic of Penn Cambria, enters as the seed favorite with a mark of 138-04. Hickory and PA#10 Lauren Lubarski is third, Fort Cherry’s Jessie Merckle, is fourth and Delone Catholic’s Stormie Hibshman is fifth. Merckle has thrown 144-0.5 this season.
