SPRINTS/HURDLES
100 Meter Dash: The short sprint could be anyone's to win with the top-4 with PR's within a tenth of a second of each other. Ronnie Gillespie, Upper Pekiomen, leads the way with a 10.75 clocking. Rashaad Williams, Central Bucks West, Tyler Smith, Norristown, and Alex Yoder, Greencaste, could all challenge for the top spot. Smith is the defending champ, while the only other returning medalist is Gillespie.
200 Meter Dash: Matt Gilmore, Cheltenham, will tackle the state title in the 200, an event he was 2nd to Altoona-grad Brady Gehret last year, and he is the favorite with the best time in the field of 21.48. Coming on an indoor injury, Gilmore is rounding in shape as the season progresses. What doesn't show is his closing desire. He'll tear the track apart to win. Ronnie Gillespie, Upper Perkiomen, Gavin Colley, Tunkhannock, and Josh Mindlin, Council Rock North (8th in 2010), are all capable of challenging for top medals in the event.
400 Meter Dash: Matt Gilmore, Cheltenham, had to settle for 2nd last year as Brady Gehret rocked a 46.46 for the win. This year Gilmore is the favorite with a time of 48.11 earlier this month. Challengers include Tyler Gallen, O'Hara, 48.33, Shane O'Neal, James Buchanan, 48.45, Colin Dempster, Hatboro Horsham, 48.58, Brian Hamilton, O'Hara, 48.63, and Terrance Taylor, Conestoga Valley, 48.64.
110 Meter Hurdles: Kowan Scott, Wilson Area, is a big favorite with the states best time of 14.17. Chris Williams, Strath Haven, has gone 14.23 and Kevin Day, Glen Mills, has gone 14.25. They will be joined in challenging for the top spots by Wellington Zaza, Upper Darby, who has gone 14.34.
300 Meter Hurdles: Eric Futch, Penn Wood, is the clear favorite with a season best of 37.47 in the event. His closest challenger is defending champ Kowan Scott, Wilson Area, with a 37.81 clocking on the season. Other challengers include Byrum Louco, North Allegheny, and Kolin Jeffers, Methacton.

MID-DISTANCE/DISTANCE
800 Meter Run: Last year's 7th place finisher, Hong Cho, Wissahickon, has the state's best time of 1:50.92 and has distanced himself from the field, but there are a host of competitors ready to step up. Connor Manley, Central Bucks West, is close to Cho with a time of 1:51.50 on the season. Drew Magaha, Upper Moreland, and Brandon Krszal (10th in 2010), West Allegheny, could also challenge for the win.
1600 Meter Run: The boys 1600 is definitely a surprise must-see event at this year's state champs. Drew Magaha, Upper Moreland, popped a 4:10.99 at the D1 champs and has big plans for states. Magaha plans to run 60's for as long as he can in the 1600, which would be a throwback to the 2005 champs where Craig Miller went through 1200 in 3:01 en route to his winning time of 4:11.98. Ned Willig, Great Valley, has a PR of 4:13.86 and could challenge along with Chris Campbell, Council Rock North, who sits at 4:15.93 (6th in 2010). Not to be counted out is Wade Endress, Altoona, who won the indoor title in 4:13.34 and was 7th last year.
3200 Meter Run: This could be a very close race with a number of runners capable of taking the win. The real question will be whether they can get under 9. Glen Burkhardt, Unionville, has the top time of the field with a time of 9:07.66 and hopes to continue the Unionville run as former teammate Matt Fischer was the 2010 champ. Ryan Gil, North Allegheny, was the runner-up last year and with a 9:13.12 clocking on the season he should be in the hunt for that elusive state title. Zach Hebda, North Hills, Ian Barnhill, Downingtown West, and Paul DeGregorio, Baldwin, are also in the hunt for the win.

RELAYS
4x100 Meter Relay: Susquehanna Township blasted a 42.02 for the top time in PA at their district meet and comes in as the favorite. However, the 4x100 is still a wide open event as the stick still needs to get around the oval. Strath Haven, 42.24, Downingtown West, 42.27, and Central Bucks West, 42.29, all stand a shot at winning the event as all have clocked under 42.30.
4x400 Meter Relay: 2010 Runnerup Abington leads the field with a 3:18.65 clocking and an experienced squad to get the stick around the track. 2010 champ Cardinal O'Hara and Central Bucks West are also under 3:20 and could challenge for the win.
4x800 Meter Relay: As is the case every year in PA, the states best mid-distance teams will showcase their talents in the 3200 meter relay. And this year could be as special as the year Central Bucks South ran a state record time of 7:33 in the event. Two PA teams are under 7:40 this year with Abington running 7:37.79 for 2nd at the Penn Relays with Central Bucks West just behind in 3rd with a time of 7:38.97. LaSalle and Wissahickon were both under 7:50 at the Penn Relays, as well. These teams could easily push each other to a low 7:30's time. Other teams with impressive seed times include JP McCaskey, 7:47.50, Conrad Weiser, 7:50.23, and Cumberland Valley, 7:50.62. CB West and Abington were 2nd and 3rd last year, while LaSalle was 5th.

JUMPS
Long Jump: This event looks to be a three-way battle at the top with Matt Green, Belle Vernon, leading the way with a jump of 23-6.25. Richard Rouse, Penn Hills, and Brent Charlton, Downingtown West, could challenge for the win as well. Green was 4th last year, while Rouse was 10th.
Triple Jump: Imani Brown, Reading, is the clear favorite in this event with a stellar jump of 50-00.5 on the big stage at the Penn Relays, where he took second. He was 4th in 2010. Jarred Posey, William Penn, and Ian Welch, Pittsburgh Central Catholic, will be battling in case Brown isn't up to par. Ryan Brumfield, Owen J. Roberts, and Deron Lee, Altoona, are also favorites in the event.
High Jump: Derek Hart, Manheim Central, leads the field with a jump of 6-8 but there are a host of challengers back at 6-7 waiting to push him for the title. Ryan Brumfield, Owen J. Roberts (the 2010 runner-up), Jay Jabat, Pennsbury, Max Mahan, Garden Spot, and Ibn Short, Milton Hershey, could all pop a big one for the win.
Pole Vault: This event is shaping up to be a very competitive one with Jacob Hensh, Laurel Highlands, leading the way with a leap of 15-6. Eric Hunter, Northampton Area, has gone 15-5 and Troy Makous, Radnor, has a 15-3 on the season. Dylan Bilka, Seneca Valley, is also up there with a 15-3 jump this year. Bilka finishing in a four-way tie for 8th in 2010.

THROWS
Shot Put: The shot is looking like a battle of the Kyle's. Kyle Felpel, Cocalico, and Kyle Long, Hempfield (3), will do battle for supremacy in the boys shot with Felpel having thrown 59-3.5 and Long at 59-2. Luke Monta, Greensburg Salem, and Terrance Edwards, Norristown, will also be in the competition for a top spot. Of the top seeds, Felpel is the top returning medalist, taking 4th.
Discus: Another battle of the Kyle's, just reversed as Kyle Long has thrown a monster 192-10 on the season and looks like a lock for the title if he throws that well again. Kyle Felpel has a season best of 178-9 and will be doing battle with Chazz Wilks, O'Hara, who sits at 174-5. Tyler Kerstetter, Selinsgrove, and Charlito Iwuagwu, Northern Lebanon (5th in 2010), are also in the hunt for medals. Wilks is the top returning medalist, taking 3rd. Long and Felpel were 7th and 8th, respectively.
Javelin: With 6 over 200 feet this battle could be intense. Stephen Feister, Hempfield (3), is tops of the field with a toss of 211-5. Billy Stanley, South Park, is the closest challenger with a throw of 209-7. Last year's champ, Ben Koyack, Oil City, has thrown 203-1.5, while Tom Lang, Pope John Paul II, has thrown 203-1. Kyle Hefkin, State College, has thrown 201-7 (6th in 2010) and David Reinhardt, Bradford, threw 201-1. One of these guys could go monster. It's an event worth seeing.
