Trenton Coles of Clairton has been the top man in the state in the 100 meter dash since mid-April with a 10.4h clocking. Coles also finished 7th last season at the state meet and is one of two returners in the event. Clay Allen of West Middlesex has a 10.68 to his name. Jarred Gambrell of Athens was 6th in 2010 and has a 10.97 season best. Tariq Lovelace of Delaware Valley Charter (10.98) and Seth Tarselli of Holy Redeemer (10.99) are the other sub 11 guys in the field.
Coles also carries the fastest AA time in the 200 meter dash with his 21.69 district win (PA#4 overall). Like the 100, he's one of two returners from 2010 with a 6th place finish. The other returner is defending champion Nicholas Patton of Tyrone Area. Patton ran 21.87 at District 6 (PA#6 overall) and has yet to lose a race in the event this year. Potential contenders include PA#8 overall Chidi Okezie of New Media Tech (21.92 on May 12), Clay Allen of West Middlesex (semi-finalist in 2010), and Seth Tarselli of Holy Redeemer (22.18 at District 2).
Okezie has the fastest time run by anyone in the field in the 400 meter dash with his 48.95 from the Philly Public School Champs on May 12. Okezie did make the finals last year and is one of three returners from 2010. Patton comes back in this event after finishing 2nd last year in 48.30. He ran his season best time of 49.87 at District 6, which seeds him in the top five overall in AA. Bryce Straffin of Clairion has the top time from any of the district meets at 49.47 at district 9 and Mike Wright of Danville is the final of four guys in the field who have run under 50 seconds in 2011.
The 110 hurdles has a big group of hurdlers in between 14.87 and 14.99. However, they all trail top seed Josh Nesmith of Bible Baptist, who has a 14.58 to his name from the PTFCA Colonial Classic. Nesmith was also 3rd in this event last year. Derek Durand of Freeport (14.87) and Todd Townsend of West Catholic (14.88) are the only other two under 14.90. Chris Alamo of Girard College had the 2nd fastest time from districts (14.95 at District 1) and qualified for the finals at states in 2010.
The 300 meter hurdles features top seed and 6th place finisher in 2010 Jordan Jones of Annville Cleona. Jones ran 39.18 at district 3, which is 2nd overall in class AA to West Catholic's Townsend (39.12 on May 14). Matt Dull of Chestnut Ridge has a 39.50 to his name, with Robert Huff of Tyrone Area (39.87) and Dustin Fuller of Washington (39.97) also having performances under 40 seconds this season.
