Ron Lopresti has coached at Plymouth-Whitemarsh for 36 years. He has had over a dozen state champions indoors, and six outdoors, including one who captured both Hurdles events (Bob Irvine). But never has he had a 20-minute period at any meet where two of this athletes performed to their own expectations and simply refused to lose - despite the odds.
Whiting says he can improve as his team repeats. Smith outscores 2nd place by herself for a team encore. Simkins gets a gold and silver. Quips and Milton Hershey sharp in AA teams titles. Philly Public League gets first-ever gold and state meet record. Miller tests his \"Nike\" speed in 1600. Best-ever PA pole-vaulter a no-height. Williams and Scott give their retiring coach two individual state titles.
Central Dauphin Ryan Whiting got two PRs in one meet. Following his specatacular 201-09 Discus on Friday, he uncorked a 70-00 Shot Put to capture the state meet record, as well as his season goal - two PRs in the same meet. Conestoga Valley went 7:40.06 in the 4x800. Both marks are US#1s. And Engineering & Science set a AA Girls PIAA record of 3:53.43 in the 4x400.
Three PIAA records bit the dust, and another was saved by a gust of wind at Day One of the Field Events at PIAA T&F State Champs @ Ship.
From the sprints to the relays, and everything in between, form held, for the most part, in the events using a Trials for advancement to Saturday Semis and Finals.
Good news from the PIAA on the eve of the state Track & Field Championships.
It\'ll be quite a show by vets Krista Simkins, Nicole Smith, Rachel Gehret, Erin Hannon...plus super freshmen Chanelle Price, Ryann Krais and Karen Shump.
Locks are the story in AAA boys, with the sprints, 1600, Shot and Dis us the best bets (without actually betting, of course.)
Gwynedd-Mercy returns a strong team while newcomers should surprise some vets in a few events. Philly\'s District 12 sends two strong teams.
If records are fall in AA Boys competition, it will probably involve Chad Radgowski, Ryan Fritz, Tommie Campbell or Jeff Weiss.
