AA Boys' 200m Preview
Austin Kratz said his efforts at the District 1 Championships were about shaking off some demons of 2017. A year earlier at Coatesville, Kratz was guilty of a rare false start that cost him a spot in the state meet. After winning the AA state crown as a sophomore, he was stuck watching the 200 from the stands at Ship.
But the Dock Mennonite senior and Arizona State signee, has roared back in 2018. He set the PA state record in the indoor 200 meters and won an indoor national title. He ran 20.74 for 200 meters this season, but we'll see how quick he can go at Ship. Remember that the all-time PA state record in the event is 20.29, held by Clinton Davis since 1983.
Hill-Freedman's Armonte Paulk hasn't raced much this spring, rehabbing an ankle injury he suffered at indoor nationals. But at the District 12 Champs, he dropped a solid time of 21.89, not far off the time he ran winning the AA state title a year ago. Watch out for Paulk, who will bring tons of talent to the table in Ship.
After that, a number of boys will have their sights set on making this final. WPIAL champ Marlin Devonshire of Aliquippa will be in the mix after a strong showing at Baldwin. District 9 saw a close final between Clarion Area's Brendan Zerfoss and Brookville's Ian Thrush. Both boys will have a great shot at making the top eight.
Girard College's Donovan Sanders has been a revelation this spring. He dropped a 22.07 in the prelims at District 1 and should make some noise at states. Also watch for Motivation's Laminu Abbas, Lehighton's Tahmir Spencer, and Mifflinburg's Eric Zimmerman.
