05/16 - 05/17 |
PIAA District 1 AAA Championships Marissa Sheva of Pennridge looked like the Marissa Sheva of old with her distance double success. The junior started the day winning the 3200 meter run in a PA#2 10:30.15, only her 3rd time running the distance in her career. In the 1600 meter final, Sheva broke away in a big way from Kaelyn Heinicke of Council Rock North on the backstretch of the 3rd lap and won the event with a time of 4:53.97.
While the veterans were flexing their muscles, a pair of new stars secured their places amongst PA's elite. McKenna Keegan of Avon Grove has been PA's top 400 meter runner since the Penn Relays and after Sunday, she became the first to break 56 seconds in the 400 meter dash this season. The sophomore ran 55.99 to secure her state top spot and win the district title.
In the 800 meter run, sophomore Maddie Villalba of Central Bucks West earned the biggest win of her young career, winning the 800 meter run against a stacked field in a PA#2 performance of 2:09.98! Villalba also led off the Central Bucks West 4x400 meter relay that captured their top form at just the right time. The two time defending district champions made it three in a row with anchor Jamila Branch powering the team to victory from the 2nd position to reclaim the top spot for her team in 3:48.28! The top four in the finals all represent the top four in PA heading into the state meet. In the field, Claudine Andre of Upper Darby briefly topped the state list in the long jump with a mark of 19-1.50 to beat out PA#3 Ariana Przybylowski of Pennridge (18-10). Taylor Hojnacki of Central Bucks South was a double winner on the weekend, taking gold in the shot put (42-4.50) and the discus (141-9).
Shannon Taub of Council Rock South and Victoria Matthews of Abington cleared 5-5 in the high jump, two inches better than eight other competitors. Cheltenham received gold medal performances from their 4x100 meter relay, the high hurdles, and the 100 meter dash. Katelyn Jackson overcame 100 and 200 meter state leader Dasia Pressley in a close final to win the event in 12.02. Chanel Brissett finished 3rd for Cheltenham in the same race. Pressley did get the best of the Cheltenham duo in the 200 meter dash with a winning time of 24.31.
Ciara Leonard was dominant in the 100 meter hurdles, breaking the 2007 district meet record held previously by Methacton great Ryann Krais. Leonard's time of 13.70 is far and away the state lead heading into states.
To cap off the success, Cheltenham continued their winning streak in the 4x100 meter relay, winning the final in 47.72. Cheltenham were crowned team champions with 56 points, 9 points better than Pennsbury. The male heavy hitters hit hard all weekend long, starting with Tony Russell of West Chester Henderson. The senior took home the 1600 (4:16.20) and 3200 meter runs (9:07.68) to enter next week's state championships as the favorite to win both races.
The 4x800 meter relay was a hotly contested event, featuring big time players and some newcomers looking for their chance to make it to states. In the end, the experience of Pennridge senior Joey Logue overpowered West Chester Henderson and Central Bucks East to the district title in 7:48.18. Logue anchored in 1:51 to secure the win.
Jeff Wiseman of Council Rock South took advantage of the relay efforts of Logue and Bensalem's Kyle Francis to win the final of the open 800 meter run in a new state leading time of 1:51.91. The long sprints featured the emphatic return of Ridley senior Malik Jones. After battling injuries throughout 2014, Jones got himself healthy at just the right time and he looked like he was never gone. The defending state AAA 400 meter champion won the district 400 meter title in a new state leading and US#7 time of 47.06 to surpass Cheltenham's John Lewis (47.80). Jones also added a win in the 200 meter dash to his weekend. After running a PA#3 21.44 semifinal in the morning, Jones won the finals in 21.75 to overtake 100 meter district champion Christian Brissett of Cheltenham.
David Marrington of Neshaminy gained ground on state leader Chance Post of Conestoga Valley in the 300 meter hurdles, winning the final over Lewis in 38.08. In the field, the foursome of Randall Johnson of Central Bucks South, Andrew Diehl of Conestoga, Dondre Pittman of Coatesville and Tra-C Davis of Coatesville all cleared 6-7 in the high jump. Gift Omo-Ekpadi of North Penn won the triple jump with a mark of 47-1.75.
Darrik Muroski of Coatesville won both the shot put (54-00.25) and the discus on his home turf (168-10).
Brandon Palaia of Spring Ford threw 187-6 to win the javelin. Lastly in the field, Cheltenham's Saahir Bethea scored 10 big points in the long jump with a winning mark of 22-9.50. Those ten points were enough to contribute to Cheltenham's dominance on the track. Wins in the 100 meter dash, the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays, combined with 2nd place finishes in the 400 meter dash and 300 meter hurdles and a 5th place in the triple jump were enough to overcome Coatesville's dominance in the field events. Cheltenham boys were crowned champions over Coatesville 68-63! Day One Girls Highlights
