The rain held off, the wind stayed calm, and the top two girls teams from the indoor season got to see each other for the first time since the indoor state meet 6 weeks ago. Pennsbury travelled to the home of the indoor champions and dared to go toe to toe with the Lady Panthers. Pennsbury got off to a good start with Uche Onuoha pulling off a big come from behind victory over Ciara Leonard of Cheltenham to win the 300 meter hurdles in a PA#4 44.17. Dasia Pressely of Pennsbury then tried her luck against Cheltenham's Chanel Brissett and Brissett got her team's train back on track. Brissett won the 100 meter dash in a PA#4 12.20 with a late charge in the final 30 meters. In the rematch at 200 meters, Brissett proved to be too much to handle as she won in a PA#2 24.91! Leonard then got her groove back in the 100 meter hurdles, recovering from her 300 hurdle defeat to win in a PA#2 14.39. Cheltenham capped the meet off with a 3:59.29 win the in 4x400 meter relay. Pennsbury did get a 2nd win on the night, running 48.38 to win the 4x100 meter relay. It was the Harrisburg track show, this time on their home oval, as the stars of the District 3 squad put on a spectacular display in front of their peers. Sierra Brabham-Lawrence was the leader of the orchestra with her two state leading performances. She became the first female athlete in PA to break 14 seconds in the 100 meter hurdles, running a blazing time of 13.80 to earn US#10 honors! The record was previously held by the great Hyleas Fountain, a US Olympian! Later, she took on the triple jump and went to the top of the state list with a mark of 38-9! For icing on the cake, Brabham-Lawrence ran 46.47 to win the 300 meter hurdles. Her teammate Ty'Asia Dansbury was also a big part of the show. She set a meet record and new state leading time of 24.66 to win the 200 meter dash. She also added a narrow win in the 400 meter dash with a time of 58.17 to win by .03 seconds. She was on track for a hat trick of gold medals when she improved on her 100 meter state lead with a prelim time of 12.08. But then the tone changed when freshman sprint sensation Janaya Webb of Norristown played party crasher and won the 100 meter dash final in a meet record 12.03 and took the PA#1 spot for good measure. Susquehanna Township continued their relay dominance at the home of their district rivals. They continued their winning ways in the 4x100 meter relay with a winning time of 48.68. They capped off the day by claiming their 2nd relay state leading mark this season, winning the 4x400 meter relay in 3:58.06! Other highlights include a meet record clearance of 11-9 in the pole vault for indoor state champion Tesia Kempski of Bishop McDevitt. Maura Fiamoncini of Mount Laurel continued her winning streak in the javelin with a winning throw of 138-1. Mady Clahane of Cumberland Valley cruised in the 3200 meter run with a time of 11:06.09. During the girl festivities, there was a boys track meet that also took place, with Charles Bowman Jr. of Central Dauphin East as the headline act. Susquehanna High School Classic
Susquehanna University SELINSGROVE -- The weather was nice and whatever wind there was, was offset by the fast Mondo surfaces at Susquehanna's Nicholas A Lopardo stadium at the university's Outdoor High School Classic on Saturday. The opportunity for fast times and long jumps drew schools beyond District 4 including Upper Dauphin, Scranton Prep and New Oxford. Three meet records were broken and several national elite marks were laid down. Lewisburg senior Jenna Farmer broke her 2014 meet record (2:20.14) with a run of 2:18.03 in a competitive field. Farmer ran with the pack for the first lap of the race before edging away for the convincing win. "Honestly I never know what to expect," she said. "I just wanted to go out like I did this morning." Farmer's AM run was as anchor of Lewisburg 4x800 when she got the baton in fourth place, used the first 300 yards to get the lead and then turned it on to finish with a personal best split of 2:17.28 "Because of that (race) I wasn't sure how much I'd have left (in the afternoon)," said Farmer. "I'm always so nervous and excited to see how the race is going to go." The Bucknell University-bound senior was also called upon for some heroics at the end of the meet when she overcame a five-second advantage by Montoursville to win the 4x400 for Lewisburg. That Farmer did not compete in the 1,600 Saturday did not stop her 2014 record from being broken. Scranton Prep junior Erin Feeney was looking for a PR and got it with her elite finish of 5:08.12 "I was hoping to PR today," said the Class AAA runner. "I didn't know the competition but I was hoping for a win." Shikellamy's Yoangelys Cedeno and Danville's Mackenzie Jones had a tight duel in the 3,200 -- at least until Cedeno broke away at the last lap bell. "We both pushed each other," said Cedeno who ran just off Jones' shoulder for most of the race. "My strategy was to be consistent. I had my fastest splits today." In the field, 2014 Class AA high jump silver-medalist Lindsey Carl won her event with an elite leap of 5-2. While three other jumpers also cleared the height Carl won on fewest misses. Carl said she's still tuning up for the season. "I'm still knocking the rust off," said the Central Columbia jumper. "Right now I'm trying to get my approach down -- it's the steps after the J right now." Selinsgrove senior Alexis Auman won the long jump with an elite jump of 17-7. Auman said the combination of the Mondo runway and the new pits couldn't be beat. "I love the new jumping pits," she said. "I had really soft landings." In the triple the Class AAA jumper saw competition from 2013 Class AA sixth-place medalist Kristen O'Malley who is back after a year of injury. While Auman came within a half inch of her PR with her 36-9.5 jump on Saturday, O'Malley won the event with a 37-5. Boys Southern Columbia hurdler Luke Rarig made up for what he said were bad starts at last week's Selinsgrove Classic in a big way. The 2014 Class AA bronze medalist in the 110s made a statement with his 14.78 win Saturday. Later he won the 300 intermediates (40.64). "I just basically ran that entire race mad," he said. And Rarig admitted that losing not just to 110 but also the 300 race last week may help him in the long run. "I hate losing but losing this early in the season helped motivate me." Selinsgrove's Brody Beiler took first in the 1,600 and 800 but it wasn't easy. In the 1,600 Beiler was challenged by New Oxford's Aaron Gebhart and won at the line by four hundredths of a second (4:35.40). "That guy is a great runner," said Beiler. "I knew he was a big dog. I just barely edged him out." Gebhart had more success in the 3,200 with a 9:39.32 win. A competitor well-known to Beiler pushed him in the 800, (Mifflinburg's) Levi (Ebersole) really attacked that first lap. It took some guys to take it out in a 60. While Ebersole faded slightly Beiler was able to maintain the pace finished with a 2:01.21. Ebersole's teammate Brian Zimmerman, who splits his time between track and baseball, set a new meet record in the 400 (49.15). In the field Warrior Run's Jake Rohm used the day-end almost ideal conditions to launch a 187-5 on his first throw for what was a five-foot PR. "I like the Mondo surface a lot," said Rohm. "It's good to be throwing that now." Girls Highlights
