AAA Girls' 100m Preview
Similar to last year the race for the top spot in AAA girls will be a very hotly contested final. It's a wide open field and in a race like that, doing all the little things correct will pay off in the end.
The top seed is Hayden Robinson of Avonworth/Northgate. A close second to winner Jonae Cook a year ago, Robinson will be looking for her first state crown. She uncorked a quick PR of 11.85 last week to run away with the WPIAL title. Robinson will contend here.
But she'll have to deal with a terrific trio from Warwick. Unsurprisingly the state's top 4x1, the Warriors went 1-2-3 at the District 3 Championships and they will be the 2-3-4 seeds entering the state meet. Lily Palacio-Lewis won at D3 in 12.02 and she was fifth in this race at states a year ago. Leah Graybill was second, but she is one of two sub-12 girls in the field; she went 11.96 to win the L-L League (she was eighth at states last year). Meghan Quinn can't be slept on -- she went 12.07 this spring. We could be seeing a lot of Warwick on the sprints podium.
Scranton's Kyahni Harbin made a statement with a 12.20 to win the District 2 title last week. That's a big PR for the junior and she should factor in with another big day. After Robinson, the WPIAL contingent is strong with the likes of Lilly Ballard of Woodland Hills, Casey Burton of North Allegheny (third here last year), Faith Mucci of Greater Latrobe, and Ava Morelli of Armstrong.
Obama Academy's Raven Haston is a two-time 100 meter state medalist. Look for the District 8 champ to make her presence felt on the big stage. The same goes for the top District 1 entry in the field, Jaleezia Gibson of Harry S Truman, the 4x1 hero from this past week. Gibson stepped up last year at states and placed fourth. District 12 champion Marlina Voker of Mastery-Shoemaker is a breakthrough performer to keep an eye on.
In a wide open field like this, expect a close race with everything on the line.
