AA Boys' 1,600m Preview
Jonah Powell of Grove City Area won the indoor state title in the mile this past winter. Now the senior will aim to close out his prep career with an outdoor 1600 state win. Powell has run 4:17 twice this season. He cruised to the District 10 title in 4:29 (hence his No. 11 seed), but make no mistake, Powell is among the ones to beat.
Garrett Baublitz was second a year ago, but the Juniata junior will look to move up to the top spot this season in the AA boys 1600 meters. He led an impressive District 6 contingent last week, running to the win in 4:15.31. That's the top AA time so far this season and an overall PA No. 4. He went 4:18 to take runner-up honors last season, but this may be his time.
Baublitz's District 6 counterparts could challenge for the win, particularly Colton Sands of Penns Valley. Sands is also entered in the 3200, but if he has something left in the tank, he could make a run at the title. He was sixth a year ago. Westmont Hilltop's Nick Fetzer was third in D6 behind a nice PR of 4:21.81. He, too, will be in the mix.
Southern Columbia's Ethan Knoebel took third at the state meet last year. He ran 4:21 to take the District 4 title, and we can expect the senior to once again be near the front this time around. Wyalusing Valley's Alex Patton, Warrior Run's Damein Moser, and Central Columbia's Joshua Broadt make up a solid D4 contingent after Knoebel that will look to get on the podium.
District 11 winner Palmerton Area's Jacob Martinez and WPIAL champ Quaker Valley's Daniel Ford will also make a push for high podium finishes in this very strong AA group.
