AAA Boys' 3,200m Preview
This has been a big year for WPIAL distance running, from the XC season to indoors and now to outdoor season. The top 5 seeds in the AAA boys 3200 meters and 4 of the top 6 AAA times in the state come from District 7 runners in what should be an interesting 8 laps at Shippensburg.
North Allegheny's Zach Kinne put down an impressive long drive late int he WPIAL final to capture the win in 9:13.47. His teammate Daniel McGoey was second in that race. The pair could certainly make it an NA 1-2 run in the event, just as they did at the indoor states 3K. Greensburg Salem's Cameron Binda was third in the race, but he actually owns the fastest time in the overall state this season at 9:07.99. Zachary Leachman of Mars Area and Christian Fitch of Fox Chapel Area were 4-5 in that WPIAL race, with both hanging well in the front pack. Leachman was third at the indoor state 3K.
The pack at WPIAL could resemble what we'll see at the state meet with a few others from across the state getting involved in what should be a very close race.
One of those who should contend is Unionville's Cole Walker, who won what was a rather tactical District 1 crown over 3200 meters. Walker has run 9:17 this season and has a kick that will bode well for him this weekend. Perkiomen Valley's Tyler Clifford, North Penn's Samir Razi, and Downingtown West's Payton Sewall all ran well at the D1 Champs.
Carlisle's Casey Padgett was a surprise District 3 champion. Now he'll look to ride that momentum into states, along with Mechanicsburg's Brandan Knepper and Manheim Township's Ian Miller, who were D3's best this season. Mifflin County's Chayce Macknair, the District 6 champ, should mix it up with the leaders as well in this field.
