Girls' 60 Meter Hurdles Preview
A freshman will look to steal the show in the high hurdles on Sunday. Bishop McDevitt's Taleea Buxton has made quite the impact in her first high school season. She will look to cap it off with a state title in an event she has dominated all season. She ran a best of 8.57 at the Armory this season and holds the fastest time in the state by over two tenths of a second.
She will need to get through all three rounds, but Buxton will be the one to beat in the hurdles at Penn State.
Surely, though, she will have challengers. Pennsbury's Kayli Williams is in the midst of a big breakthrough season. She has continued to get better, most recently dropping a 8.81 for the win at the DVGTCA Meet of Champs. The junior will be in the mix.
Tia Taylor of Saint Basil Academy is the top returner from last year's state final. She took sixth last season. But Taylor is hurdling the best of her career; she PR'd with a 8.84 to win the Philly Public League Invite. The only other returning medalist is Brianna Smith of Cheltenham, who took seventh last year at states. She ran a PR of 8.91 to take second to Williams at MOCs. The senior Smith has the experience and can't be counted out in this field.
Pine-Richland's Danielle Bryant is right on the cusp of breaking 9 seconds. She ran a best of 9.00 a few weeks ago and will look to eclipse that barrier and make a run at a high finish. The same goes for Kelsey Sebwe of Archbishop Ryan, who ran a best of 9.06 to take third at MOCs.
Mount Saint Joseph's Annie Lemelin, Hickory's Aniyah Anderson, North Penn's Anais Williams, and Milton Area's Leah Bergey are among the other medal contenders in this strong field of entries.
