AAA Boys Discus Preview
Hempfield Area's Daniel Norris has set the pace throughout the 2021 season in the discus. The Southern Illinois signee has five meets this season with a winning throw of at least 181-6 and backup throws of at least 180 feet in each of those events. He throws great at home as his PA#1 and US#14 PR of 190-2 came in an early season dual meet, while the rest of his best meets have all been at different venues. He's a pretty consistent competitor with the platter.
The gap between Norris and the rest of Saturday's qualifiers is quite substantial, but the battle for the rest of the podium spots should be very tight. The rest of the year's top 11 throwers are all seniors, and all have qualified for the AAA finale. District 10 champ Ryan Harvey of General McLane had his breakout performance in winning the Butler Invitational title with a best of 177-4, which is PA#2. Colin Lyons of McKeesport Area threw 175-5 at the Baldwin Invitational to finish behind Norris and ahead of Harvey in the lone meeting of the year's longest throwing trio in AAA in western PA. Northern's Jon Barrett opened big in late March on his home circle, throwing 175-9.
Throw in up-and-coming freshman Peyton Murray, a teammate of Norris' at Hempfield Area, and expect lots of movement among potential placers in all six rounds.
