Girls 60m Dash Preview
There is plenty of intrigue around the girls 60m dash, as three of the top six fastest PA girls all-time in the event will be set to square off. All three of those girls have already raced this season at Millrose, which provided a nice preview, but now there's a state title on the line.
Avery Lewis of Friends' Central is the top seed and the favorite with her best of 7.40 from the Millrose Games, where she took third overall. The versatile star is PA No. 3 all-time and looking to capture what would be the first state title of her career since last year was wiped out due to COVID.
She will be challenged, though, by Spring Grove's Laila Campbell and Germantown Academy's Fore Abinusawa. Campbell, a sophomore, has run 7.45 this winter. That came at Millrose when she placed fourth. Abinusawa -- now the veteran of the bunch -- was fifth at Millrose in a season best of 7.46. Campbell's season best puts her at T-PA No. 6 all-time and she'll look to make some moves up that list. She's been very consistent in the event this winter. Abinusawa hasn't raced a ton this year, but three years ago as a freshman, she ran a PA No. 2 all-time time of 7.32. She has the best PR in the bunch and will look to channel that 2019 state performance and chase her first indoor state title.
Only .06 separates these three and this build up to a thrilling final. This isn't one to miss. It would take a significant season best from one of these girls, but Thelma Davies' 2019 state record of 7.30 could be on alert this weekend.
This is a deep field with 20 girls entering with times (or converted times) that are sub-8 seconds. Southern Lehigh's Madison Trout and Somerset's Hailey Rios have both run bests of 7.70 this season. Msgr. Bonner & Abp. Prendergast's Taylor Johnson (7.74 season best), Upper Saint Clair's Dani Prunzik (7.78), West Chester East's Chinonye Moneme (7.78), and Central Bucks West's Mimi Duffy (7.82) all should be right in the mix, competing for the top five.
The interesting wrinkle that the indoor state meet always provides is the rounds. There are three of them. Successfully navigating the prelims and semis to get to the final is no easy task, and we'll see who handles those the best.
