Penn Relays Preview: PA Girls Invitational Events


High School Girls' Discus Throw Championship - Thursday, 9:30 A.M.

PA Entries: Ericka Jackson (Harrisburg); Ella Lucas (Warwick); Alex Pancoast (Unionville); Justley Sharp (Homer Center)

Jackson and Lucas have been on a roll in the disc this spring. Jackson is at PA No. 2 with a best of 140-1 and Lucas is PA No. 3 with a best of 139-10 (PA No. 1 Elizabeth Tapper is entered in the pole vault). Sharp, meanwhile, isn't far off with a best of 131-7. The favorites hail from Jamaica, led by Holmwood Tech's Cedricka Williams, who has tossed 176-10, and St. Jago's Abigail Martin (164-1). Williams could take a run at the meet record of 179-6.


High School Girls' Javelin Throw Championship - Thursday, 9:30 A.M.

PA Entries: Audrey Friedman (Fort LeBouef); Allie Melchiorre (Berwick); Gabrielle Visco (Pennsbury)

Leading the way for PA in the javelin is Friedman, who sits atop the state rankings this season with a best toss of 136-9 from this past week. The PIAA fourth place finisher from last year threw 140-1 at the National Throws Festival last year, and looks to be in a good spot entering this weekend. Melchiorre has a best of 133-6 (PA No. 2) this year and holds a PR of 134-4 from last year.

These PA girls will be chasing top seeds Nicole Woods of New Jersey and Eugenio Guerra Cruz of Puerto Rico. Woods has thrown 145-6 this year, while Guerra Cruz has tossed it 145-11.

High School Girls' Shot Put Championship - Thursday, 9:30 A.M.

PA Entries: Alexa Brown (Strath Haven); Annika Ermold (Governor Mifflin); Alex Pancoast (Unionville)

Brown is the top PA entry, and she is having a terrific outdoor season. After a strong indoor season that saw her placed third at the indoor state meet, Brown has started out strong this spring, posting a PR of 42-8 in the shot. Pancoast enters with a best of 41-1 and Ermold a 40-4. All three will be aiming to get inside the top ten, which is headlined by Maryland's Trinity Franklin and Virginia's Wisdom Williams.
