PREVIEW: 2022 District 1 Championships

District 1 Class A Boys - Race Preview

  • State Qualifying Spots For Teams: 2
  • State Qualifying Spots For Individuals: 10

Contending Teams: Jenkintown

The Rundown:

Oliver Michell of Jenkintown will be the one to beat, as he's having an elite senior year. Between finishing 5th in the White race, the Lehigh Paul Short Run, where he ran 15:30.80, and taking second in the White race at the PIAA Foundation meet, Michell proves to have the makings of a true competitor.

Other individuals to look out for are Denis Tulin, Jesse Patterson, John Byler, and Isaac Mixon, who all happen to be from Jenkintown.

Aidan Quattrocchi of Bristol, Martin O'Rourke of Regina Luminis Academy, and Andreas Quattrocchi of Bristol are another group of individuals to watch.

The obvious favorites in the team race are Jenkintown, as the team's top 5 runners are also the top five ranked individuals in the district. This historically successful team will again be looking to add a title to its reign.

District 1 Class AA Boys - Race Preview

  • State Qualifying Spots For Teams: 1
  • State Qualifying Spots For Individuals: 5

The Rundown:

Jack Becker, a senior from Lower Moreland, is gaining the momentum needed to contend as a district champion. From running 15:35.00 at the Gettysburg XC Invitational to winning a Suburban One League title, Becker is looking unstoppable.

However, if anyone competes with Becker, it's Ciaran Chambers from Holy Ghost Preparatory School. Chambers has had an impressive senior campaign, consistently running around the 16:15 mark, with his season-best time being 16:14.00 at the Six Flags Wild Safari Invitational. His consistency is amazing, as every cross-country course varies in difficulty.

The Todd brothers from Bishop Shanahan, Jameson, and Steven, will be at the front of the pack. Papakojo Danquah of Holy Ghost Preparatory, Matthew Haugh of Springfield Township, and Daniel Perez of Holy Ghost Preparatory are runners to keep an eye on as well.

Holy Ghost Preparatory will be trying to defend its title. They have excellent odds to be repeat champions with a solid top 5 (Ciaran Chambers, Papakojo Danquah, Daniel Perez, Brendan DiEnna, and Jack Evans).

Although Bishop Shanahan should put up a solid fight as they also have an impressive top 5 (Jameson Todd, Steven Todd, Owen Whitaker, Louis Edgcumbe, and Will Kolimago).

Lower Moreland and Pope John Paul II are two other teams capable of mixing things up.

  • State Qualifying Spots For Individuals: 30

The Rundown:

Brian DiCola of Hatboro Horsham will be looking to defend his district title on Saturday. The senior is having an outstanding season after winning the Lehigh Paul Short Run in a record-breaking time of 14:43.20.

Patrick Lawson from Haverford Township High School will put up a fight. After running 15:06.20 at Paul Short and winning the Central League Championship, he has solid momentum going into Saturday's meet.

Quentin Ryan from Haverford Township High School, Andrew McGonigle from Owen J. Roberts, and Matt Castronuovo from Upper Dublin are all runners in the mix.

North Penn looks like the top team coming into the district meet with a very deep squad from 1-7 (Achilles Shui, Justin Landis, Sacchith Miryalkar, Colin Fisher, Mathew Landis, Joey Sharkey, and Brady Sweeney).

North Penn will have to fend off Penncrest and Haverford Township, who both have similarly strong-looking teams.

Souderton Area and Spring Ford are some other schools to keep an eye on.
