Highlights: PIAA District 3 Championship

The 2023 District 3 Championship proved to be two days of action-packed competition. Read more on the 10 district record-breaking performances and check out the compiled list of district champions below.

On the track Matthew O'Brien of Susquehanna Township got the ball rolling in Friday's 3A 3200m run final. The Cornell University commit ran 8:59.82 in a valiant solo effort to become the 21st PA athlete to run under nine minutes in the event. O'Brien's performance overtakes Weber Long, a 2022 Greencastle-Antrim graduate's record of 9:06.63 from just last outdoor season.

Lex Cyrus of Susquehanna Township shot himself out of a cannon during the 3A 100m dash final to run a new personal best of 10.45. Cyrus takes down a 44-year-old record formally held by Dwayne Allen of Harrisburg.

JJ Kelly of Chambersburg hit a monster personal best on his second attempt to win the 3A triple jump covering 49'2". Kelly not only improved upon his previous PR by over a foot, but he also snagged Imani Brown's (Reading) district record of 48'-8.75" from 2012.

As for the girls, Laila Campbell of Spring Grove improved upon two of her own district records from last year. Campbell won the 3A 100m dash in a blistering 11.55 to come back in the 3A 200m dash with another win in 23.24. Her previous records were 11.61 for the 100m dash and 23.93 for the 200m dash.

Kaddel Howard, a freshman from Cedar Crest, is undoubtedly making a name for herself. She won the 3A 400m dash final in 54.68 to break Ty'Aisa Dansbury's (Harrisburg) 2015 record of 55.10. Notably, Jillian Sydnor (Shippensburg) finished 2nd in 55.06, also running faster than the previous record.

The J.P. McCaskey 4x400m relay team dominated their way to break Cumberland Valley's 2022 record by over four seconds. The J.P. McCaskey squad, comprised of; Kamiah Wright, Lucie De Syon, Isabella Shertzer, and Kamyah Wright, won the 3A title in 3:48.21.

Katie Urbine of Solanco broke the first record of the meet during Friday's 3A vault final. Urbine vaulted 13'-8", an eight-inch personal best outdoor, quite literally raising the bar for future District 3 contenders. Her mark is just 0.75 higher than Mackenzie Horn's (Manheim Township) 2018 record.

Speaking of pole vault, Adeline Woodward of Trinity set the new 2A vault record at 12'. Woodward beat Megan Silva's, a Trinity alum, 11'-7" record from 2016. This is a season-best performance for Woodward matching her 2022 outdoor personal best.

The last record broken, but certainly not least, was by Ella Lucas (Warwick) in the 3A discus. Lucas improved upon Eliese Mitchell's (Garden Spot) 1999 record by eight inches, throwing 157'-7" on her third attempt.
