We have reached the final weekend for teams and athletes to move up or to simply qualify for the PTFCA State Championships a week from this Saturday. This past weekend featured a lot of amazing performances and some events had some big changes to the great 8!
This week, the two biggest stand out performances came in the long jump. Jordan Matthews of Abington became the 2nd athlete in the past five years to crack the 19 foot mark with her PTFCA Indoor Carnival winning mark of 19-2.50. Matthews mark puts her number 2 in America and she's in a class of five girls who have gone 19 feet or higher in the country this year. Just 24 hours later, Logan Brenker of Conwell Egan won the Catholic League championship, became PA#2 and US#10 with her winning mark of 18-6.75, almost a full foot improvement from her previous best of 17-7.75 one month ago.
The event that had the most changes at the top belongs to the 200 meter dash, with four new performances making the top 8. Cierra White of Engineering and Science became the new state leader with her winning time of 24.99 at the carnival. White also added a meet record time of 7.61 in the 60 meter dash to become the state leader in that event as well. Taylor Ellis-Watson of Springside ran a 25.3h at State College last Thursday night, and then finisher 2nd at the Carnival with an even faster time of 25.40 on a flat track, which is PA#5. Ellis-Watson added a PA#3 in the 400 at State College with her time of 57.5h. Deme'shia Davis of Central Dauphin East finished .01 behind Ellis-Watson in the same race for PA#6. Emerald Walden of Plymouth Whitemarsh became US#7 in the 60 meter hurdles in her pursuit of Shelley Black of James M Coughlin. Walden ran a personal best 8.77 to become PA#2. The top three hurdles in PA (Black, Walden, Nugent) are all US top tens.
On Sunday, Michelle Davis of West Catholic ran a PA#4 time of 25.37 in winning the Catholic League 200 meter crown. Her performance was one of several new performances from West Catholic in the Great 8 this week. Davis added a PA#4 in the 400 with her Catholic League winning time of 58.20 and she was also part of two PA#3 West Catholic relays from the weekend. West Catholic ran 1:43.99 in the 4x200 meter relay, which is the fastest time on a flat track this year, and they added a 4:04.15 4x400 meter relay performance which is also the fastest on a flat track. Jada Steward ran a PA#6 time of 7.87 to win the 60 meter dash and she was on both winning relays.
In a quiet weekend for the distance events, Strath Haven became the new state leaders in the distance medley with their winning time of 12:22.34 at the Carnival. Central Bucks West cracked the top 8 in the 4x800 meter relay with their Carnival winning performance of 9:44.34, good for PA#7. Morgan Shaeffer of West Perry was the surprise winner in the 800 meter run with her PA#4 time of 2:17.20 on Saturday. Her time beat the likes of Lindsay Rheiner of Council Rock North (PA#3), Emma Keenan of Gwynedd Mercy Academy (PA#5), and Angel Piccirrillo of Homer Center (PA#9). Speaking of Angel, she ran the distance triple at the Carnival, and her 3000 meter run victory in 10:25.44 was good to earn PA#7. Meghan McGovern was 2nd to Piccirrillo in the mile at the carnival with a PA#5 time of 5:09.32.
