The boys Meet of Champs was simply the best PA meet of the season, as 31 performances qualify for national rankings, highlighted by six ones in the Triple Jump and a three-PR day for the top hurdler in PA.
Gearing up for the State meet in a week, the sprint and field athletes cranked up their performances at the TSTCA Championships @ Slippery Rock. Kim Rorabaugh of Purchase Line, improved her season best to 39-11.50.
Hatboro-Horsham girls (below) improve their US#4 DMR to 12:22.43 behind Nicole Murphy (2:25), Megan Rae (.65), Caitlin Klaas 3:47 and Janine Ricci (5:04). Ricci also went 10:22.05 in the 3K and 1:03.6 in 4x400.
In the biggest PA meet of the season, 167 teams (178 had sent in applications) with over 1500 athletes descended on Lehigh University for a smoothly run nearly eight-hour meet with 20 Dyestat Elite performances. The most impressive athlete of the indoor season continues to be Springfield (Montco) senior MarkKorich, who won the mile in 4:22.27, the 800 in 1:56.07 and came from way behind in the 4x800 to bring his team into sixth place.
Springfield (Montco) senior Mark Korich posts US#2* 1:54.3 800 - which goes nicely with his PA#2 4:25.3 Mile and PA#3 8:59.0 3000.
Norristown's Mike Whitehead leapt into the top spot in the PA rankings, becoming the first of the season over 46 feet with his 46-05.75 effort.
Frances Koons, Allentown Central Catholic, tried for the distance triple and came up with two first and a second.
The 4x800 at States is going to be one of the best yet, as everybody seems to be putting together a fast foursome.
Josh Smith, Selinsgrove, joined the 44-plus club in the Triple Jump, going 1/2 behind that for the win.
North Hills' sprinter Andrew Johnson knocked off another tenth as he took the 55 Dash in 6.2 seconds and now shares the top spot in PA with Kenny Covington of Lancaster McCaskey.
The Christiansens invaded the confines of Slippery Rock's indoor track, and each came away with a win and a second place finish.
Juniors Kate Papenberg, Red Lion, and Frances Koons, Allentown Central Catholic, battled in both individual distance races. Papenberg captured the 3200 by two seconds over Koons, going 11:24. In the 1600, both were timed in 5:22, with Papenberg again getting the edge.
Improving performances on the track and in the field events, including a new US#3 and #4 DMR as the Hatboro-Horsham squad of Nicole Murphy, Megan Rae, Caitlin Klass and Janine Ricci went 12:23.9 to beat St. Hubert's by less than three seconds
Tyree Suber is progressing as the season ages, and with the home track boost, he cleared 60 feet in the Shot Put, going 60-06.75.
In a meet where elite shared the atmosphere, and sometimes the track, with high school athletes, PA performed well, as several individuals and teams took home first place medals.
The heart of the indoor season for the girls erased a decade-old association record in the 200. William Penn's Juanita Broaddus seared to a 25.1, bettering the 25.7 mark set by Chester's Kia Davis in 1993.
Ryan Whiting, Central Dauphin, upped his distance in the Shot Put this season to a PA #2 55-09.

Lancaster McCaskey senior Kenny Covington blew away the field in the 55 dash, going to a 6.2 to vault to the top of the PA Indoor charts, and place himself squarely in the top 10 of the country.
Rachel Giannascoli, Alicia York, Julia Sommers and Fiana York of Haverford Highunleashed the best 4x800 in PA this season that also happens to be the #3 time in the US.
Penn Wood sprinter Chioma Nwaneshiudu dominated the short races, going 7.0 in both the trials and the finals of the 55 dash, and 26.1 in the 200.
Wyomissing's Robin O'Hara won two events, a somewhat unusual combo of the 55 Dash (7.55) and Pole Vault (9-01).
