AAA Boys' 1,600m Preview
Surprise winners have taken gold in the AAA 1,600 meters each of the last two years. With a deep and open field set for this weekend, any number of boys could find themselves on the top of the podium come Saturday.
The top seed is Evan Addison of LaSalle, who threw down a quick, mostly solo 4:13.85 to win the District 12 title last week. Addison has been in the mix for state titles many times before, but this will be his best shot at a win. He looks to be in very good shape and ready to take on the 1,600.
Tyler Wirth of Wallenpaupack has run 4:14 this season. He was second to Kyle Burke of Abington Heights at District 2. Wirth was ninth last year, so he'll have some good motivation to move well up this season. Burke has run 4:16 this year and could certainly put himself in the mix.
The indoor state champion was Liam Conway of Owen J. Roberts, who was third at states last year. The senior dropped a 4:15 to win at Penn State in the winter. He ran 4:16 at the Penn Relays for a full mile and then won the District 1 title last week. He's got a mighty kick, so watch for that.
Bishop Shanahan's Jonah Hoey opted for the 1,600 over the 800 meters at districts. He's got 1:53 half mile speed and shouldn't be counted out despite his youth. Ridley's Zack Forney ran an aggressive race to take third at District 1. If he uses those same aggressive tactics at states, it could shake up how the race plays out.
Carlisle's Jack Wisner dropped a big PR of 4:18 to win the District 3 title. Carlisle took a 1-2 finish in this event last year, so Wisner will aim to keep that title with the Herd this time around. Cameron Binda of Greensburg Salem went 4:18 to take the WPIAL win. Along with his teammates Mark Brown and Dylan Binda, there could be a lot of G-S in the 1,600 final. Mount Lebanon's Patrick Anderson should also be in the mix after a 4:20 for second in the WPIAL.
A number of others could make some noise if they get to the final, including LaSalle's Vincent Twomey, Warwick's Connor Shields, Southern Lehigh's Thomas Matsumura, Conestoga Valley's Nathan Grucelski, and Grove City Area's Jonah Powell.
This is a deep field and we could once again see a surprise winner here.
