AA Girls' 100m Hurdles Preview
Last year in the state final, Saint Basil Academy's Tia Taylor was in what appeared to be a very close race for second in the AA girls 100 meter hurdles final. Instead, the race's top seed Brenna Cavanaugh hit the last hurdle and left the door open for Taylor to take the race. The freshman did just that, winning a close race in 14.48.
Now a sophomore, Taylor will aim to defend that title this weekend. She has run 14.94 this season and will once again be in the mix for the win.
But the top seed and top-ranked AA high hurdler is Western Wayne's Trina Barcarola. The District 2 champion ran 14.82 in the prelims of the D2 meet and then 15.00 in the finals. She'll be among the ones to beat here; last year she was fourth in the 300 hurdles final.
The only returning medalist besides Taylor in the field is Jayla Bernard. With Saint Basil a year ago, she was eighth in the state. Now with Neumann Goretti, she is coming off a District 12 win and has a season best of 15.37.
Loyalsock's Megan Kendall will be one to watch. She went 15.01 to win the District 4 crown this past week, which was a major PR. She'l have some momentum heading into the state meet. Fellow D4 hurdlers Ariana Gambrell of Athens Area (15.30 season best) and Kari Cambria of Southern Columbia (15.04 season best) will also be in the mix for the win here.
Hickory sophomore Aniyah Anderson went 15.27 to win the District 10 crown. Expect her to contend as well. The same goes for Kayla Pyles of Bermudian Springs, the District 3 champ, who went 15.32 for the win at Ship on Saturday.
Ultimately, this will be a close race, and as we learned a year ago, anything can happen in the high hurdles.
