XC Is Back: PTXC Weekend Highlights (Sept. 19)

Altoona Mt. Lion Invitational - Meet Recap

Girls Race

Lauren Shaffer of Portage Area took home the win at Altoona for the second straight season. Shaffer took out the race hard from the gun and gradually pulled away from the field, coming home in 19:50, just off her time from last season, to claim the victory. It's a great start to the season for the junior, who will be a factor in Class A again this fall.

Penns Valley's Kelsey Hull was second 20:18, Conrad Weiser's Sydney Werner was third in 20:20, and Grier's Edith Manfred was fourth in 20:22 in what turned into a good battle for those spots.

The overall team title went to Penns Valley, which scored 55 points -- led by Hull -- to take the victory. Windber Area was second with 85 points.

Boys Race

Penns Valley's Brendan Colwell opened up his season with a win at Altoona. The senior covered the course in 15:54, narrowly beating his own course record at Logan Elementary School. PV were without Colton Sands, the defending state champion in Class A, who is battling a knee injury and figures to be out until at least the district meet.

Penns Valley still grabbed the team title, scoring 52 points for the victory. Altoona Area was second with 61 points.

Northern Bedford's Ian Zimmerman was second in 16:25, opening up his season with a strong showing. Cranberry's Matt Woolcock was third in 16:54.
