AA Girls' 3,200m Preview
It looked like there was going to be another terrific Saturday morning showdown in the AA girls 3200 meters between Brownsville Area's Gionna Quarzo and Loyalsock's Isabell Sagar. Unfortunately for Sagar, it won't come to be as the senior raced injured at the District 4 Championships last week and was unable to qualify. So that leaves the reigning champion Quarzo as the big favorite to win a second straight 3200 crown.
Quarzo, now a junior, went 10:29 (a PR) at South Hills early in the season and has run in the 10:30 range twice, showing some good consistency. With Sagar out, Quarzo is the only girl in the field who has run under 11 minutes this season.
North Schuylkill's Cori McCormick comes in as the No. 2 seed. She outlasted Northern Lehigh's Reagan Pender for the District 11 title. Both girls will be factors in this race, looking to pull off the upset over Quarzo with a big race. McCormick was 11th last year as a freshman.
District 4 champion Lauren Trapani of Warrior Run has run 11:13 this season, a PR at Lock Haven. Saturday will be her outdoor state meet debut. Camp Hill's Laura Sakol will also be making her outdoor state meet debut. She comes in with a season best of 11:23 from Mid-Penns and could certainly find herself up high on the podium.
The top returner besides Quarzo from last year's state meet is Maddison Hayes of Fairview. She took last year as a freshman and the District 10 champ has run 11:19 this spring. Carmen Medvit of Shenango and Jules Jones of Williamson will also be in the mix for high finishes in this field.
