John Apostal Lucas, one of the world’s foremost Olympic historians and longtime Penn State professor, died on November 9, 2012. The award is the first ESPN The Magazine citation for the junior, who recently earned All-America honors on the track with a fourth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Big Ten Conference announced the two Penn State student-athletes who graduated in May as the 2009 Medal of Honor winners by the Big Ten Conference on Wednesday. Zoe Bouchelle (Cockeysville, Md.) of women's soccer and James Pagana (Sellersville, Pa.) of men's track & field are Penn State's representatives among the 22 Big Ten student-athletes who were bestowed as winners.
The 18-year-old Jones, bound for Penn State in the fall on a track scholarship, has begun her outdoor season with high expectations. That confidence was certainly boosted during her winter campaign when the gifted sprinter took home gold in three different events at the OATCCC Ohio State Indoor Championship on March 9, earning then personal bests in the 60 (7.49 seconds), the 200 (24.4) and the 400 (55.5).

Kyle Dawson would probably trade exercise-induced anything for the form of exercise-enhanced condition he has known as Rhabdomyolysis. The condition cost him a red-shirt year in the 2007-08 season; not a bad thing as a freshman distance runner. Worse, it nearly cost him a real season of eligibility this cross country season.
NYU opened defense of its NCAA championship in men’s cross country over the weekend, winning its own invitational Saturday morning at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. Coach Nick McDonough’s Violets, surprise winners of the Div. III nationals a year ago, rested two of last year’s top returnees, Jesse Schneider (Delhi NY) and Calvin Lee (Old Tappan NJ), and relied on newcomers. “We’ll be looking to reload after our last few highly successful seasons,” McDonough said. “We have a lot of young guys, including some freshmen, that will help fill the void.”
