AAA Girls' 3,200m Preview
Marlee Starliper of Northern has become one of the best distance runners in Pennsylvania state history, and she'll go for the double this weekend to match her two golds from the indoor state meet. Starliper ran 10:17.41 this season at Henderson and followed that up with a District 3 title. She'll be the favorite to take home her first outdoor track state crown in this race on Saturday morning.
There's a long line of girls hoping for a chance at the upset. Oakland Catholic's Hannah Schupansky went 10:33.66 to win the WPIAL title. That's the second fastest time in the state so far this season. Taking second was the defending state champion, Clara Savchik of North Allegheny. Last year, Savchik nearly broke the meet record. The senior can't be counted out this time around.
After Starliper, an incredible five more girls dipped under 11 minutes at the D3 meet. Senior Abby Yourkavitch of Chambersburg went 10:37.90 for second. Wilson's Reagan Underwood, Cedar Crest's Gwyneth Young, Northeastern's Maddie Warrender, and Warwick's Kate Dickow broke 11 as well. Each of these girls is battled-tested and should be ready for the final.
One to watch is Katie Dammer of Abington Heights. The senior is also running the 1,600, but she'll be a serious factor in the 3,200. She ran a 9:45.76 for 3,00 meters to take fourth at the Penn Relays, and the senior won't go down without a fight.
District 1 champion Brooke Hutton of Coatesville will look to close out her senior year with a big race and a spot near the top of the podium. West Chester East's Allyson Clarke, North Penn's Ariana Gardizy, and Cocalico's Jamie Zamrin are among the others that will be in the hunt in this crazy fast field.
